Real So Cal Takes Second Place in Group 1 After Defeating Dallas Texans
REAL SO CAL TAKES SECOND PLACE IN GROUP 1 AFTER DEFEATING DALLAS TEXANS
MILWAUKEE (July 14, 2011) – Real So Cal claimed second place in Group 2 after defeating the Dallas Texans 2-0 in their final group match with goals by Angel Fernandez and Daniel Dannas. Real So Cal finished group play with four points and beat out Seattle Sounders FC for second place based on goal differential.
Real So Cal netted a goal on either side of halftime, with the opener coming in the 12th minute from Fernandez. Dannas converted a penalty kick just before halftime to give Real So Cal the 2-0 lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the match. With the win, Real So Cal will face Real Salt Lake AZ for third place on Saturday, July 16, at 6 p.m. CT. The Texans will take on CASL Chelsea FC Academy earlier that day at 1 p.m. CT in the game for seventh place.
In the beginning of the first half, the match was fairly even between the two teams with most of the action occurring at the midfield line. Real So Cal struck for the first time when Brandon Vincent crossed the ball from the left side of the goal to Fernandez, who was waiting patiently n the box. Fernandez took a couple dribbles away from goal that drew the Texans goalkeeper Kevin Wright off his line, and Fernandez used to space to pull past the ‘keeper and deposit home his second goal of the tournament.
The Dallas Texans continually tried to attack and set up scoring opportunities but they were unable to capitalize. In the 28th minute, a foul on Texans Sylvester Contreras set up a free kick from about 30 yards out. Andre Reyes sent in a perfectly flighted ball that set up an air battle won by Real So Cal.
In the last minute of the half, the Texans had another chance when Reis Woolley dribbled down the end line and tried to stuff the ball past Real So Cal goalkeeper Jason Trejos, who stayed composed and was able to collect on the save to send his team into halftime up by one.
Three minutes into the second half, Texans defender Jonathan Kotowski brought down a Real So Cal player in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Dannas converted the kick by taking it to the right as Wright fell to the opposite side.
Midway through the second half, the Texans created opportunities with numerous corner kicks. Reyes took a shot from the top of the box that flew left of the goal and on the next one, Brandon Aubrey’s header fell wide.
In the 79th minute, Real So Cal’s Dannas attempted to head in a cross which was blocked by the goalkeeper. Dante Nino collected the rebound and hit another shot towards goal, but the goalkeeper recovered in time to make the second-straight save.
In the last minute of the match, the Texans almost got on the board with their final corner kick, but Real So Cal stood tall and maintained their shutout.
