U.S. U-23 WNT Travels to Germany for Three Matches
U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team head coach Bill Irwin will take 18 players to Germany from May 21-31 for matches against German club TSG Wieseck (May 24 in Giessen), the German U-23 Women’s National Team (May 26 in Marburg), and the South Korea U-20 Women’s National Team (May 29 in Marburg). Irwin has named 17 players and will choose one more before the team departs for Europe. For years, the usual summer destination of the U.S. U-23s was the annual Nordic Cup, but as the tournament has not been held the past two summers, the U.S. team will head to Germany, site of the next U-20 and senior Women’s World Cups, for three excellent matches. Irwin will bring one WPS player in Kelsey Davis, who is the back-up for the Chicago Red Stars. Alexa Gaul from the University of Texas is the other goalkeeper. The rest of the roster features some of the top collegians in the country, including a trio of high-scoring strikers in Danielle Foxhoven (24 goals for Portland in 2009), Christen Press (21 goals for Stanford in 2009) and Sarah Hagen (24 goals for Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2009).
