Referee of the Week for Week Eight

Referee of the Week: Caleb Mendez
Hometown: Key Biscayne, Fla
USSF Grade: 7

Caleb Mendez has been selected as the Development Academy Referee of the Week for an outstanding performance on Saturday, Oct. 30, in a Southeast Division showdown between Kendall SC and South Carolina United.

Mendez attended the Academy’s 2010 Spring Showcase in his home state of Florida and will be attending the 2010 Winter Showcase this December in Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to his work in the Development Academy, Mendez has broken into refereeing for the Youth National Team programs, PDL and USL.

Mendez, originally from Humacao, Puerto Rico, began refereeing in 1993. Though he admits that refereeing used to be an “on and off” commitment for him, he explains that he has recently made the decision to focus on developing his skills and advancing to the state level. He credits the high standards set by the Florida Soccer Referees developmental program for his success, explaining “the bar that is set for us demands a high level of excellence and commitment.”
