Albertson Soccer Club Builds Success Through Diversity

CHICAGO, Ill. (June 6, 2008) – The U.S. Soccer Development Academy, with exposure to national team and college coaches, long-distance travel and a 30-game season, has provided bonding experiences for the Albertson Soccer Club (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.). The season has allowed the U-15/16 and U-17/18 Albertson teams to highlight their diversity and demonstrate how the Academy has enhanced their successes within the soccer program.

“We are as diverse a group as you are going to find,” said Brad Butwin, the Vice President of the Albertson Soccer Club. “You’ve got basically every nationality; not in terms of where they were born (they were born here) but in terms of having kids that have family and parents from a whole host of different countries: Ecuador, Colombia, Iran, Jamaica.”

“We have kids from all different backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic positions,” he said. “We are a club, based in Long Island, but that really allows us to draw from not only the five boroughs but from all of New York. That’s definitely added to the experience.”

The Albertson squad showcased its team unity at the Development Academy Spring Showcase during SPARQ training when the players demonstrated that despite coming from different backgrounds, the team comes together both on an off the field.

“They were just having a lot of fun with it while they were waiting for the next person to go. The kids were dancing with the music playing. By the time they had finished with the test, they were basically surrounding the trainer in a circle all dancing like kids performing on the streets of New York City and everyone is just standing by and watching. It just took on a life of its own. The point is that the kids have really bonded and [the Development Academy] has brought together a lot of kids from different cultures.”

Although the main focus of the Development Academy is to cultivate a strong future for soccer in America, the Academy experience has led many young players to become more aware of the importance of an education and the value of a college degree, and not solely the game of soccer. Soccer can provide many opportunities to play at the collegiate level, but many of those opportunities may not be made possible if players are unable to be scouted.

“The feedback from college coaches and National Team coaches has been tremendous,” said Butwin. “It has gotten kids thinking about going to college when otherwise they may not have, going to better schools that they otherwise would not have gotten into, and going to different parts of the country. Really, it’s expanding their horizons and exposing them to things that they wouldn’t be exposed to. The Development Academy has motivated us and required us to take a step further.”

The Albertson Soccer Club takes pride in its tight knit environment and its ability to foster relationships between the different age groups within the program. The club encourages not only hard work on the field but in the academic classroom, offering scholarships and guidance to those in need.

“It’s a very collegial feel within the club and so it’s a very nice community feeling where you have the little kids coming to the game watching the big kids,” said Butwin. “They look up to the big kids and idolize them a little bit. So when you have a real club atmosphere contributing financially and emotionally, the Development Academy has really created this feeling and the big kids are regarded as the poster children for the club.”

Albertson will next compete Saturday, June 7, against PDA, with the U-15/16 game to kick off at 12 p.m. ET and the U-17/18 squads to square off at 2 p.m. ET at Tully Park in Manhasset Hills, N.Y.
