CARY, N.C. (Wednesday, October 9, 2002) – Needing a two-goal win to finish in second place in the 2002 Nike U.S. Women’s Cup, the Italian Women’s National Team (1-2-0) came up a goal short in posting a 1-0 victory over Australia (1-2-0) tonight at SAS Park in Cary, N.C. After 90 minutes of scoreless, rough-and-tumble action, Italian midfielder Elisa Camporese snapped home a header at the top of the six-yard box in the first minute of stoppage time to grab the lead. The Italians pushed for a second goal, but came up short, despite outshooting Australia 9-3.
Even with the loss, Australia claimed second place with three points and a superior goal differential of –3. Italy, with a –4 goal differential, finished in third place, while Russia finished in fourth place with a –5 goal differential. By winning all three of its matches by a combined score of 13-1, the U.S. Women’s National Team claimed first place with nine points and won their eighth Nike U.S. Women’s Cup title in as many chances.
