CHICAGO (Sept. 20, 2006) – The U.S. Soccer Federation and Nike will welcome 24 girls club teams, the Cal-South Under-16 ODP team and three of the USA’s youth national teams to The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., for 42 matches at the first-ever Women’s Nike Friendlies, being held from Sept. 28-Oct. 1. The matches will be staged in three age groups: U-16s, U-17s and U-18s.
The weekend will be capped by the U.S. Women’s National Team taking on Chinese Taipei on Sunday, Oct. 1, at the HDC. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live by ESPN2. The U.S. women, led by team captain Kristine Lilly and forward Abby Wambach, are 11-0-3 in 2006 and will be facing Chinese Taipei for the first time since 1995. The U.S. team has not lost a match in regulation time since November of 2004.
Tickets for the U.S. WNT match, starting at $15, are on sale at ussoccer.com, all Southern California Ticketmaster outlets (including Robinson’s-May, Wherehouse Music and Tower Records), The Home Depot Center ticket office (stadium ticket office is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and by phone at 213- 480-3232. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets by calling U.S. Soccer at 312-528-1290 or obtaining a group order form at ussoccer.com
The Women’s Nike Friendlies will be the first event of its kind for youth women’s players, and is modeled after the annual tournament for youth men staged in Bradenton, Fla. The U.S. Under-15 Girl’s National Team will play in the U-16 age group while the Under-16 Girl’s National Team and Under-17 Women’s National Team will play in the U-18 age group. Each team will play three games in an environment which stresses quality soccer and player development over wins and losses. Tournament standings are not kept during the competition.
The 24 club teams in the tournament represent 14 different clubs which are some of the most well-known and successful girls clubs in the United States, having combined for scores of state, regional and national championships. Six clubs have multiple teams in the Friendlies. The Colorado Rush (U-16, U-18), Real Colorado (U-17, U-18), the Dallas Texans (U-17 and U-18) and Irvine (Calif.) Strikers (U-16 and U-17) have two teams each, while Slammers FC (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Surf SC (San Diego) have teams in all three age groups.
All of the matches featuring U.S. teams will be played on Field 1, the field closest to the stadium. The U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team, coached in this tournament by U-20 WNT head coach Tim Schulz, will play Surf SC at 10 a.m. on Sept. 28 in the day’s opening premier match. On Sept. 29 the U-17s will face the U.S. U-16s at 2 p.m. in that day’s premier match and finish its schedule on Oct. 1 at 10:30 a.m. against the Dallas Texans U-18s.
