U.S. MNT Ranked 8th in the FIFA World Rankings, Ties Highest Spot Ever

CHICAGO (Wednesday, May 12, 2003) – The United States has climbed back into the Top 10 in the FIFA World Rankings, the dominating 1-0 performance against fourth-ranked Mexico on April 28 in Dallas, elevating the USA to #8 in the world.  The U.S. jumped three spots after being ranked #11 in the April ranking.

The #8 spot equals the highest position the U.S. has ever occupied in the world rankings, the side first reaching that height in September of 2002, on the heels of their last victory against Mexico, a 2-0 win in the Round of 16 of the 2002 World Cup.

The U.S. cracks the top ten for the first time since September of 2003, having spent the last 28 months ranked 13th or better.  Only two teams in CONCACAF reside in the top 20 in the table, with Costa Rica slipping to 22nd while Jamaica and Honduras hold the 50th and 51st spots respectively.

The U.S. Men's National Team is next in action June 2 against Honduras in their final tuneup before 2006 World Cup Qualifying gets underway. Kickoff for the match at Gilette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass, is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast on Telemundo (SDD, 11:30 p.m. ET).  The U.S. begins their World Cup qualifying campaign against Grenada on June 13 in Columbus (ESPN2, 1:30 p.m. ET), with the return leg scheduled for June 20 at the National Stadium in St. George's, Grenada (ESPN2, 4 p.m. ET).
