Post-Match Quote Sheet: U.S. WNT vs. Mexico

Post-Match Quote Sheet
U.S. WNT vs. Mexico
CONCACAF Olympic Women's Qualifying
Jan. 24, 2012

U.S. Women’s National Team head coach PIA SUNDHAGE
On the match…
“I am very happy about four goals and especially Carli Lloyd, the way she was on the end of the set pieces. In the beginning of the game we got up 2-0 fairly quickly, but after that we couldn’t find the rhythm in the attack and it was a little bit tough for us to change the point of attack and get it going. In the second half, by putting Syd Leroux up top, we stretched the team a little bit and it got better and better. And of course getting that 3-0 goal gave us confidence.”

On shifting the back line while playing without Ali Krieger…
“We gave Becky Sauerbrunn a chance at centerback. We know that Christie Rampone and Rachel Buehler can play together (in the middle) and Rachel Buehler at right back turned out to be a pretty good move. That’s one of the options. We will probably try more options moving forward.”

On taking Abby Wambach off in the 60th minute…
“There are two more games, hopefully. The next game is the most important game and we need a fresh Abby Wambach as she will be in the starting lineup so that is why we took her off.”

On the team’s attitude after the match…
“I am really happy that after the game everyone was saying ‘one more game.’ That is very important. What is always important is the next game and that we do whatever we can do to win that game. So far we are doing well and I hope it continues like that.”

On Costa Rica having an extra day of rest before the semifinal…
“It is a huge advantage, to have an extra day, but on the other hand our fitness coach Dawn Scott has done a tremendous job with this team, so we will make sure we do the right things tomorrow and the day after so we are ready for that game.”

On Carli Lloyd scoring two header goals…
“On all the set pieces that we’ve been talking about and training, she is in the box. She is very good in the air. Everybody is talking about Abby Wambach, and they should, but we do have other good players in the air.”

U.S. Women's National Team forward ABBY WAMBACH
On the team’s mindset heading to Friday’s match with Costa Rica
“We haven't done anything yet. This was really good for us to put us in a position where we get out of our group [first] and cross over to play the second seed, Costa Rica. But this was the exact same position we were in in Mexico in 2010 during World Cup qualifying. We haven't done anything we still have one game left so stay focused. We'll enjoy tomorrow - we have off tomorrow - and get our legs back while we start preparing for Costa Rica.”

On her fitness level…
“I feel great. Pia and the medical staff have done a really good job of keeping me fresh. I've had two 45 [minute games] and one 60 [minute game] and that's perfect leading into this next game against Costa Rica.”

On the rich goal scoring form of players on the U.S. WNT…
“Our team played very well tonight. Obviously Carli had three goals and that's a confidence builder. That's three consecutive games with players getting three goals or more, and that's good for us.”

On the result tonight and focusing on Costa Rica…
“Playing against a team like Mexico, they're great on the ball and tactically good. I think for us on a bigger field like this it's really tough for a team like that to beat us. We play against some of the best teams in the world and if you play on a big field we believe we're one of the fittest teams in the world. But first and foremost we have to finish off Costa Rica and get to the final. Hopefully we can play against Canada in the final because that will be a fun game as well.”

On the tournament and the pressure of a semifinal…
“We know the games are going to be close. We know the next game against Costa Rica is win or go home and those are the type of games we relish. As a professional athlete you hope to be put in these types of situations.”

On what she said to the team on the field after the game…
“I think it's simple. Everybody knows it and understands it. In hindsight, when we were in Cancun, maybe we wished we had said to ourselves ‘look, we haven't done anything. We have to win this game and we need to get out of this game to qualify.’ Because we didn't say those things, I just don't want to leave any stone unturned, so that's what that was about.”

On the team’s tribute to Ali Krieger…
“It was Jill Loyden's idea and I think it was brilliant. She has that tattoo on her forearm. Ali will be a part of this team whether she's here or not. We love her and we miss her. We wish she had a speedy recovery. But we will be ok. This team isn't made up of any individuals. The team goes on and wins games and we're going to do well with or without Ali. We just want to make sure she knows that we never forget her.”

U.S. Women's National Team midfielder CARLI LLOYD
On her goals and play through the first three games…
“I've been gaining more experience and playing smarter. I'm trying to play one and two touch out there, trying to be that linker out there. I think it's working and I think the team is doing well moving the ball quickly and playing one and two touches.”

On the win against Mexico…
“Mexico is great at knocking the ball around and they move the ball really well. But getting that early goal stressed them out a bit and we kept on them. It was a great team effort and it's good we're in the semis now.”

On the early goal…
“Any time you get an early goal or two it helps. A 2-0 lead is a scary lead so it was important for us to push for that third and keep it going.”

On Mexico’s tactic of shutting down the midfield…
“I think obviously Mexico is a great team. They compacted the middle so it was a little hard for us to find our rhythm. Midway through the first half they flipped their triangle in the middle and put two high and one low to mark Cheney. We changed things up at half and I thought that was good. The second half was definitely a lot better. We kept possession.”

On her goals…
“It's great, but I can't do it without my teammates. I'm dedicating my hat trick to Krieger. We miss her very dearly and I know she's with us spirit. It's unfortunate she can't be here with us.”
