The U.S. Under-15 Men’s National Team played their final match of the 25th Dallas Cup this afternoon, beating Central Jackson SO 2-1 behind second half goals from Anthony Wallace and Joseph Sorrentino. The U.S. finished Bracket E of the U-16 Group with a record of 1-1-1 and a total of four points, placing them third in their group.
After a scoreless first half that saw a number of great saves by both goalkeepers, CJSO broke open the game in the 55th minute as Ahmad Smith’s right-footed blast beat ‘keeper Matt Walker and hit the back of the net. Smith collected the ball at the top of the box and made a nice spin move before launching his blast, leaving Walker helpless.
U.S. head coach Jim Barlow made two saves after the goal, putting in Andrew Giallombardo in for John Tardy and Guiseppe Carotenuto in for Brett King. The two substitutions changed the pace of the game, swinging the momentum back to the U.S. almost immediately.
Five minutes after the substitutions, the Under-15s found the equalizer as Perica Mesosevic dribbled the ball down the right flank to the endline and played the ball across to Wallace, who was able to get a foot on it and knock it home.
In the 75th minute, Mesosevic grabbed another assist, this time setting up Sorrentino with a nice chipped ball over the defense from midfield. Sorrentino ran onto the ball leaving his defenders behind and finished past the oncoming ‘keeper.
Despite not advancing to the quarterfinals, the U.S. will play a few scrimmages on Thursday and Friday against other teams that were also eliminated from the tournament. While still trying to set up an opponent for Thursday, the U.S. will face Sporting Ruckus (Redwood City, Calif.), who they fell to 1-0 on Monday (April 5).
