CHICAGO (Wednesday, September 25, 2002) – U.S. Soccer is offering a unique two-day coaching symposium in Houston, Texas, on October 18-19 that will conclude with the chance to watch an exhibition match between the WUSA’s Washington Freedom and Atlanta Beat at Rice University. The symposium will include lecture presentations from U.S. Soccer’s National Staff Coaches and field sessions covering a wide range of topics specific to the women’s game.
“This is one of the most exciting times in women’s soccer history in this country with our Under-19 National Team recently winning the inaugural FIFA Under-19 Women’s World Championship and the Women’s National Team about to begin the defense of their Women’s World Cup,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach April Heinrichs. “This weekend represents a wonderful opportunity for coaches to receive top-level instruction in the classroom and on the field, and then wrap up the weekend by watching two of the top pro teams in the world play.”
The symposium includes classroom sessions on October 18 and field sessions followed by the Freedom-Beat exhibition match on October 19. In the classroom sessions, U.S. Women’s National Staff Coach Dave Simeone will review and discuss the recent FIFA Under-19 Women’s World Championship. The USA won the inaugural world championship for youth women earlier this month, topping host Canada 1-0 in the final on a golden goal in front of 47,784 fans in Edmonton. Simeone’s presentation will include video highlights of the group games to analyze systems, styles and trends from the world championship. The field sessions that will take place the following day will reflect the evolving needs of player development in the women’s game.
The Freedom and Beat will meet at 5 p.m. on October 19 in a match that pits the runner-ups of the first two Founder’s Cups against each other. The Freedom are paced by the attacking duo of Mia Hamm and rookie sensation Abby Wambach. The Beat counter with Cindy Parlow and a stout defense led by goalkeeper Briana Scurry.
Registration is open to all coaches, and “A” license coaches attending the symposium will earn two units toward the renewal of their license. Cost to pre-register (prior to October 16) for the symposium is $60 for U.S. Soccer Coaching Organization Members and $70 for non-members. Walk-up registration is $70 for members and $80 for non-members. The cost of the symposium includes one ticket to the Freedom-Beat game on October 19.
