What’s it going to be? Door number one, door number two, or door number THREE?!? Okay, so this section has less to do with “Let’s Make A Deal” and more to do with the Multiple Choice section of an SAT test. “In 3’s” peeks inside the head of a select National Team player as they pick one of three choices for 25 questions about personal tastes and pop culture.
Under-19 defender Rachel Buehler is, like many players that dot National Team rosters, a California kid through and through. When she’s not recovering from a pair of ACL injuries or anchoring the U.S. defense at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, the freckle-faced San Diego native likes to snowboard and eat In-n-Out burgers. And when she gets back from Thailand, hopefully with a tournament gold medal around her neck, the aspiring medical school student will hope to follow in Julie Foudy’s footsteps both on the field and in the classroom at Stanford.
Favorite big city in the U.S.: Chicago, L.A. or NYC?
“I’ve only been to Chicago and New York once, and it was only for a day, so I guess it has to be L.A. But I don’t really like L.A. that much. Isn’t San Diego a big city? I think San Diego is the best. It’s ‘America’s Finest City.’”
Favorite side of San Diego: La Jolla, Coronado Island or Mission Beach?
“I have to pick La Jolla, because it’s closest to Del Mar where I live. I have fond memories of La Jolla Cove because my dad used to take me snorkeling there and I used to love going to see the seals. Okay, I still love going to see the seals.”
Best date activity: dinner and a movie, sporting event or comedy club?
“Well, my first date with my current boyfriend we went to dinner at Benihana and it was awesome with the guy chopping up everything in front of you. But we have gone to San Diego Padres games as well, so it’s a toss-up.”
Favorite leisure activity while on the road with the U-19 National Team: grab a movie, hit the mall or do homework?
“Homework. It’s not like my favorite, but it’s a must. If I don’t do it, I fall too far behind.”
Favorite way to enjoy the beach: lay out and read a book, go for a walk/bike ride or try to surf:
“I try to surf. I have a big foam board at home and every once in a while I bust it out and attempt to surf. Laying out is nice too…and reading. You have to do it all at the beach, you can’t do just one.”
“My dog Rosie died a couple months ago and it was really sad. She was the best dog ever. We still have pictures up of her everywhere.”
Ideal future profession: small animal veterinarian, a pediatrician or orthopedic surgeon?
“Sometimes I think I want to go to medical school, sometimes I don’t. But if I do, all of those seem like something I might want to do at some point in my life. I guess sometime down the road, I will have to choose.”
Soccer & Sports:
Favorite athlete that competed at Stanford: Tiger Woods, Summer Sanders or Julie Foudy?
“Although Tiger is awesome, Julie Foudy has done so much for soccer. I’ve never met her before, but she seems really cool.”
Favorite San Diego sports team: Chargers, Padres or Sockers?
“Now that the Spirit are gone, I have to say the Padres. Khalil Green is awesome. I like the Sockers, too, because when I was young, one of my coaches played for them and I thought that was pretty cool.”
Favorite extreme board sport: skateboarding, snowboarding or wakeboarding?
“I’d have to say snowboarding. My dad goes helicopter snowboarding where he drops down into drifts from a helicopter, but he’s also been trying kiteboarding. He’s really into it. It’s really tough because you are on a wakeboard but you are being pulled by a kite. I am not sure I could stay on my feet.”
Favorite female "Friends" character: Rachel, Phoebe or Monica?
“I like Phoebe, just because she’s quirky and weird. Monica is a little too neurotic and Rachel has my name, so that has to be good.”
Reality show you still watch: "Real World," "The Bachelor" or "American Idol"?
“I don’t really watch any of them, but sometimes I watch ‘Real World,’ but it annoys me because they are all so dramatic all the time. I watched the second season of ‘American Idol’ all the way through, but I don’t watch it any more.”
Favorite show on Comedy Central: "Daily Show," "South Park" or "Chappelle's Show"?
“I’ve seen the Chappelle's Show a few times. That’s pretty funny.”
Favorite movie genre: action, comedy or drama?
“It just depends on the mood you are in. I like ‘em all.”
Most promising young actress: Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff or the Olsen twins?
“You’d have to ask my little sister. She’s 14.”
Hottest young Hollywood hunk: Ashton Kutcher, Tobey Maguire or Orlando Bloom?
“Oooooooh…tough one. I liked Orlando Bloom in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ but Johnny Depp is my favorite.”
Funniest movie starting Will Ferrell: "Anchorman," "Old School" or "Elf"?
“I guess you can identify with ‘Old School’ being in college. ‘Frank the Tank’ is the man.”
Favorite kind of music: Pop, hip hop or rock?
“Classic rock. I like the oldies. Simon and Garfunkel are my favorite. I like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.”
Best classic rock band: Beatles, Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin?
“Whoa…that’s scary. I hadn’t read this one before I answered the one above, but I guess I’ll say the Beatles. ‘Let it Be’ and ‘Yesterday’ are two are my faves.”
Favorite tough girl singer: Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani or Kelly Osbourne?
”I like some Avril Lavigne songs, and some of the older No Doubt stuff is good, but I’m not really into any of them. Gwen Stefani is cute, though. She has an interesting style.”
Favorite type of non-American food: Mexican, Italian or Chinese/Asian?
“Again, it depends on the mood, but I like sushi a lot. And I love those little hole-in-the-wall taco shops they have in San Diego. That’s authentic.”
Best California burger-and-fry fast food: Carl's Jr., In-and-Out or Jack in the Box?
“Don’t even give me the options…In and Out. I have decided they have the best burgers, but not the best fries.”
Best late-night food/snack: burrito, slice or gyro?
“I try not to eat late at night, and if I do, I don’t eat that kind of stuff. I’ll have a bowl of cereal or something.”
Best dessert: Cake, ice cream or pie?
“Just give me straight up chocolate. Give me a warm brownie with mint-chip ice cream.”
Best American-invented condiment: ketchup, ranch dressing or imitation butter spray?
“What is imitation butter-spray? I have never even heard of that. It would definitely be ketchup because on international trips it makes everything edible.”
