Quote Sheet: U.S. Coaches and Players Discuss U-20 Championship

U.S. head coach TONY DICICCO
On the night’s game:
“First I’d like to congratulate North Korea on a wonderful effort. It was obviously very difficult for us to hold onto the lead because they kept coming at us and giving us trouble possessing the ball. I am very, very proud of my players tonight.”

On how his team played throughout the tournament:
“We won because we played very good defense throughout this tournament and because Sydney (Leroux) and Alex Morgan scored as many goals as they did.”

On how it feels to be the champion:
“It’s an absolutely amazing feeling. I’ve never felt like this before in my life. After the game we were all crying because it just felt so amazing. I’m so happy with my team and the way we played the whole way through. We’ve gone through a lot together and to go to the final and have the gold medals around our necks is just amazing.”

On how confident the team was heading into tonight’s game:
“I think our confidence coming into tonight was the best it’s ever been. We knew what we were capable of doing and we knew that we’d been able to score goals all the way through the tournament. We knew we’d have to do that tonight if we wanted to win and that’s exactly what we did.”

U.S. goalkeeper ALYSSA NAEHER
On what it means to be world champions:
“It’s something we’ve been working toward for two years now and it just puts all of our hard work into perspective when you see a result from it. It’s something we’ve all wanted very badly for a long time and it’s the best feeling in the world.”

On the team’s celebration:
“There was a lot of singing and dancing and we took a lot of pictures. We’re just obviously very excited and it was a lot of fun.”

U.S. forward ALEX MORGAN
On being the world champion:
“This is probably the best feeing I’ve ever had. Just to have 19 teammates there with me on this journey was just great.”

On what her goal tonight meant for her and the team:
“Well I think we were happy with a 1-0 lead but once it became 2-0 I think we realized that we weren’t going to lose this one. We stepped it up after the first goal and we didn’t let them come back.”

On how she scored tonight:
“I was aiming for the far post, but I got off balance. In the end though that was a good thing because it caught the ‘keeper off her line.”
