Development Academy Weekend Wrap-Up (Feb. 12, 2008)

CHICAGO (Feb. 12, 2008) – U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy has announced the hiring of Dave Sarachan as its Scouting Manager, while Tony Lepore and Raul Diaz Arce will be full-time Development Academy Scouts.

All three will have a hands-on role in evaluating, educating and scouting players, while also training and evaluating club coaches in the Development Academy. The overall goal is to provide more opportunities for each club to work directly with U.S. Soccer’s National Staff Coaches.

Sarachan has coached at the highest levels of the game in the United States, both as a head coach in Major League Soccer for five years and as an assistant for the U.S. Men’s National Team under head coach Bruce Arena from 1999-2002. After helping the U.S. to the quarterfinals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Sarachan was named the head coach of the Chicago Fire. During his first rookie campaign he earned MLS Coach of the Year honors after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield and leading the Fire to the U.S. Open Cup Championship and the MLS Cup in 2003.

Diaz Arce, who played for seven seasons in MLS, is the all-time leading scorer for the El Salvador national team, with 35 goals in 49 appearances and was an assistant coach of the Under-17 U.S. Men’s National Team from 2004-2007.

Lepore has worked for many years as an assistant coach with the Under-15 Boy’s National Team and the Under-14 National Identification Camps, identifying and training young players throughout the country.

In this weekend’s Development Academy action, the U-17/18 squad from Greensboro hosted Ohio Elite on a windy Sunday, coming away with a 4-1 victory.

Greensboro coach Marc Nicholls said; "I was pleased with the players’ response today. Once we got going we created lots of chances and always looked threatening going forward. This performance should stand us in good stead for the Academy showcase in Dallas next weekend."

Thomas Driver took a free kick in the 31st minute that found an unmarked Grayson Leonard, who found the back of the net with his head.

Just minutes after halftime, Driver picked up his second assist on the day, playing a through ball for Ronal Castellonas. Castellonas touched the ball around the last Ohio Elite defender and slotted the ball home to double Greensboro’s lead. Castellonas’ second goal of the game came eight minutes later on a penalty kick created by teammate Alex Toro-Flores.

Ohio Elite got on the board in the 66th minute, and picked up its offensive pressure, but Greensboro was able to take advantage of their push to attack, picking up their fourth goal in the 76th minute when Toro-Flores put away a Castellonas cross for the final score of 4-1.
