PA Classics Move Into Championship Game with 3-0 Win Against North Carolina Fusion

MILWAUKEE (July 14, 2011) – Two goals from Connor Maloney helped PA Classics top North Carolina Fusion 3-0 and earn a place in the championship game in their first-ever trip to Development Academy Finals Week.

The victory gives PA Classics seven points from their three group matches. They will meet the LA Galaxy on Saturday, June 16, at 8 p.m. CT at Valley Field at Marquette University with a national title on the line. North Carolina Fusion finished in third place in Group 2, and will face Seattle Sounders FC in the fifth-place game on June 16 at 3 p.m. CT at Uihlein Soccer Park.

Needing a win or a draw to take the top place in the group, PA Classics began the game with energy and were ahead after just five minutes. Connor Maloney jumped on a loose ball and cut in toward the middle of the field to shake his defender before ripping a shot that flew high and just under the crossbar to give his team a dream start.

The Fusion settled into the match and began to press, knowing a victory would send them to the championship. Though the match was played at a high intensity, neither team was able to create many dangerous opportunities. It wasn’t until the 66th minute that either team threatened, and again it was PA Classics getting on the board.

Three minutes after entering the game, Joseph Julius made his presence felt from the right back position. After winning a tackle deep in his own defensive end, Julius carried it toward midfield and played a perfectly-weighted ball ahead for Kyle Bitterman. Bitterman did the rest, touching around the last defender and slipping the ball past goalkeeper John Brooks to double PA Classics lead with less than a quarter hour to play.

A PA Classics buildup led to the game’s third and final goal in the 79th minute. A driven cross from the left side found Maloney open in the box, and he was able to bring the ball down, turn and hit a hard shot from close range that gave ‘keeper John Brooks little chance.
