U.S. Futsal Beats, Ties Mexico in Friendlies

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The U.S. Futsal National Team beat and tied Mexico in a pair of matches this weekend as the team prepares for the CONCACAF Final Qualifying Tournament in Heredia, Costa Rica which begins July 24.

On Friday, the U.S. topped Mexico 3-1 with a pair of unanswered goals in the second half by Brian Soell and DeWayne Gilpatrick. In the second game of the series on Saturday Matt Tanzani scored in the second half as the U.S. picked up a come-from-behind tie.

These matches were the final chance for head coach Keith Tozer to evaluate his team before he selects his 12-man roster for the tournament early this week. The team will depart on July 19 for Costa Rica for a few days of training prior to the beginning of the tournament.

The U.S. will open its qualifying campaign against Panama on July 24, and will round out its group play on July 26 against Guyana and July 28 against Cuba. From there the U.S. will hope to advance to the semifinals on July 30, where the winner of the two semifinal matches will qualify for the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship being played from Nov. 21 to Dec. 5 in Chinese Tapei. Both finalists will play for the CONCACAF crown on July 31.

The U.S. earned a spot in the eight-team final round competition after sweeping Honduras in a two game series in May in Milwaukee, Wis. The United States compiled an aggregate score of 7-1 over Honduras, with MISL star Lee Edgerton leading the way with two goals.
