w/ U-19 WNT goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris
What’s it going to be? Door number one, door number two, or door number THREE?!? Okay, so this section has less to do with “Let’s Make A Deal” and more to do with the Multiple Choice section of an SAT test. “In Threes” peeks inside the head of a select National Team player as they pick one of three choices for 25 questions about personal tastes and pop culture.
At just 16 years old, U.S. Under-19 Women’s National Team goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was the youngest player on the USA's 2002 FIFA U-19 World Championship Team, and her play between the posts was crucial in the Americans winning the first-ever women’s world championship at the youth level. Now 17, and still eligible for the next U-19 World Championship in 2004, the surfer girl and Satellite Beach, Fla., native shares some strong opinions on American pop culture in this month's edition of "In Threes".
Best part of California: North, South or Baja?
"It's all about where the best surfing waves are. SoCal has the best waves year round, but the biggest ones are in NoCal where you can get some HUGE waves in the winter. Still, I have to go with SoCal because of the hot weather."
Worst male haircut: Mohawk, mullet or bowl cut?
"Mullets rock. They should be in style. So I'll have to go with the bowl cut. The mohawk is hard core, the mullets rock and the bowl cut, well, it's just too old-fashioned."
Worst female haircut: High bangs, mom bob, or feathered?
"I have to go with the high bangs. You are just killing yourself with the dudes if you have the high bangs."
Best date activity: Movie, Theatre, or Comedy Club?
"For us high school kids, it's probably the movie, but it might be the comedy club, depending on the mood. If I'm in the mood to go out and laugh, I'll hit the comedy club, but if I'm in the mood to chill, then movie it is."
Best leisure footwear: flip-flops/sandals, runners/trainers or sneakers?
"Being a Florida girl who lives near the beach, there is no contest: Flip flops."
Best late, late night talk show host: Conan, Kilborn or Carson (Daly)?
"Carson Daly. He's the only one I've seen. I'm usually asleep by 11:30."
Most pathetic Baywatch series: “Baywatch” (original), “Baywatch Hawaii,” or “Baywatch Nights”?
"Baywatch Nights? I've never even heard of it. Since you have to have sun on the beach, I'll go with that."
Best female superhero: Wonder Woman, Catwoman or Storm (from the X-Men)?
"I’m not a cat girl, and I've never heard of the Storm, so definitely Wonder Woman. She's got it going on."
Worst female singer-turned-actress: Mariah Carey, Madonna or Britney Spears?
"I'm not a big fan of singers trying to be actors, unless you are J-Lo, so this might be a pick 'em. Britney is better at acting than singing, so it can't be her. Madonna is a good actress, so by default, I have to go with Mariah."
Best rapper-turned-actor: Eminem, Ice Cube or DMX?
"Definitely Eminem. Great rapper, great actor, great performer."
Favorite modern Charlie's Angel: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz or Lucy Liu?
"Lucy Liu was awesome, but I have to go with Cameron Diaz. She worked the Soul Train dance number and you have to admire that."
Best veteran actor over the age of 40: DeNiro, Pacino or Redford?
"You can't choose out of those three. Their movies speak for themselves, but if pressed, I'll go with Pacino. I liked ‘Insomnia.’”
Best music channel: MTV, MTV2 or VH-1?
"MTV. I watch it every single day. I am an MTV rat."
Best style of rock: Classic rock, Punk rock or Rap rock?
"Being 17, I'm not that in tune with the classic rock, and I really don't like the punk, so I'll go with Kid Rock and the Rap rock."
Best Soft rock singer-songwriter: Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson or John Mayer?
"Gosh, they are all so good. You can't even ask me to choose one. That's not even fair."
Best modern-day hip-hop artist: Nelly, Jay-Z or Ja Rule?
"Gotta go with Nelly. He's just got something about him. I love how he performs and sings and his overall style. The boy is special."
Best kind of bike: Mountain bike, Lowrider bike or BMX bike?
"Lowrider. I wish I had a one. I would seriously cruise up to school on that."
Cooler X-game: surfing, snowboarding or skateboarding?
"Surfing, of course. Didn't you see ‘Blue Crush'? Well, that's me, without the really big waves."
Best video game system: Xbox, PS2 or GameCube?
"PS2. I have XBox and PS2, and the PlayStation is cutting edge."
Favorite type of non-American food: Mexican, Italian or Chinese/Asian?
"Gotta go with the Italian food. Definitely a fan of pizza, pasta and pretty much everything else."
Best dessert: Cake, ice cream or pie?
"If I can't have all three together, I'll go with ice cream. I swear I eat it everyday. My favorite flavor is definitely chocolate."
Best burger-and-fry fast food: McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s?
"Definitely Wendy's. That is some awesome food. Wendy's is a cut above the other two."
Best nougat-filled candy bar: Snickers, Milky Way or 3Musketeers?
"I have to go with Snickers, because not only it is a tasty treat, but they are great supporters of youth soccer. Why wait? Grab a Snickers!"
Best breath mint: TicTacs, Altoids or Flavor Strips?
"TicTacs don't last very long--too small. The paper in the mouth makes me gag, so Altoids it is, especially the Cinnamon ones."
Worst vice: Coffee, caffeine or junk food?
"Junk food, because it will make you fat."
