AJ Coroda leads Carmel United against Michigan Wolves; Sprague focuses B/W Gottschee on Baltimore Bays

CHICAGO (May 2, 2008) -- Two of the top teams in the Under-15/16 Great Lakes Conference face off in this weekend’s Development Academy action as the Michigan Wolves (Farmington Hills, Mich.) host the Carmel United Soccer Club (Carmel, Ind.) at Livonia Stevenson in Michigan.

Led by a potent attack, Carmel United looks to secure their 12th straight win in this weekend’s competition. The team has tallied 39 goals in their Academy campaign, averaging 3 goals per game with AJ Coroda leading the offensive midfield.

“I would say that AJ Coroda has been a great team leader,” said Carmel United head coach David Kofta. “He’s been a good example on the field as well.”

Carmel United also hopes to continue their past success on the field with a strong defensive line-up that has allowed only six goals in 12 Academy games.

“We’ve had very strong goalkeepers,” said Kofta. “Andrew Moor and John Dawson have gone nine games without giving up a goal. We move the ball pretty well and we have some very talented attacking players which allow us to defend with a lot of players.”

The Wolves return from two wins last weekend against conference rivals CASA (Cleveland, Ohio) and Internationals SC (Cleveland, Ohio) with a total record of 10-1-3. This weekend’s match will be the fifteenth Academy game for the Wolves, marking the halfway point in their thirty-game Development Academy season.

The Baltimore Bays Soccer Club (Baltimore, Md.) challenge B/W Gottschee (Rego Park, N.Y.) in a cross-conference match-up as the Under-17/18 teams kick off at Brennan Field in New York.

B/W Gottschee returns from two ties last weekend against conference rivals FC Greater Boston Bolts (Waban, Mass.) and Seacoast United (Hampton, N.H.). With a record of 5-3-4 and currently tied for first place in the Northeast Conference with Met Oval (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the team has been led by forward Giorgia Ferrara and central midfielders Greg Mallia and Rich Heredia.

“Giorgio Ferrara whose one of our forwards has helped us,” said head coach John Sprague. “He hasn’t scored many goals but he’s been able to create goals. Also Greg Mallia and Rich Heredia have been doing a great job organizing and controlling the pace of the game.”

Sprague and B/W Gottschee have been working on their defensive shape and communication in preparation for this weekend’s match.

“I think one of our main strengths right now is being able to defend as a unit,” said Sprague. “Also, I think one of the areas we’re improving most is our ability to communicate and having some of the leaders of the team step-up and dictate the pace of play.”

With a total record of 10-1-2, the Bays travel this weekend looking to continue their four-game winning streak. The team currently stands tied with the New York Red Bulls for most goals scored in their Mid-Atlantic Conference with a total of 36 team goals.

Meanwhile, the Bays’ defensive line has conceded the least goals against in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, allowing only 12 goals in 13 games.
