Cabrera Finalizes Roster for Spring 2009 Semester of U.S. Soccer Under-17 Men's National Team Residency Program

CHICAGO (Feb. 2, 2009) – U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Wilmer Cabrera and his staff have kicked off the 2009 spring semester of the U.S. Soccer Residency Program with 39 players finalized, and one more player to be added at a later date. All of the players were born in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and are eligible to compete in the 2009 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship and the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Three players will be part of the program for the first time as Cody Cropper, Cristian Flores and Jose Perez enter their first semester in Bradenton, Fla. Cropper, a goalkeeper who stands at six feet four inches, is the only Residency player from Minnesota. Flores, who plays for Rayados de Monteray in Mexico is the lone professional player on the roster. Perez joins the U-17s from the FC Dallas Juniors of the Development Academy.

Cabrera also welcomes back 14 players who are entering their fourth semester of the program and one, Charles Renken, who is beginning his fifth semester. Carlos Martinez and Jack McInerney return to Bradenton as the team’s leading scorers in 2008, both registering six international goals. Luis Gils and Tyler Polak led the squad with 13 starts, while Stefan Jerome and Joseph Gyau each made 16 appearances.

The team will continue to hold foreign training camps, supplemented by domestic matches, throughout the spring as players compete for a place on the team that will play in the 2009 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, which will be held in late April. If the U.S. qualifies for their 13th consecutive FIFA event at this level, they will travel to Nigeria in October for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

The U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and train in the morning under the guidance of Cabrera and assistant coaches Paul Caffrey, Paul Grafer, Keith Fulk and Gerson Etcheverry. In the afternoon, the players attend classes at nearby Bradenton Preparatory Academy. While in the full-time residency program, the U.S. not only trains daily under Cabrera, but also has access to the IMG Academy’s spacious facilities. The team regularly uses IMG’s state-of-the-art strength-training facilities, as well as some of the nation’s best sports psychologists that work at the Academy. The IMG Academy includes top-of-the-line soccer equipment, three Bermuda grass fields, an indoor dome with artificial turf, two swimming pools, newly renovated student housing and dining facilities.

Since its inception in 1999, over 250 players have been through the full-time Residency Program, many of whom have moved on to Major League Soccer, or professional leagues in Europe. So far, 17 players have also registered at least one cap with the full MNT: Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley, Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Gaven, Eddie Johnson, Justin Mapp, Chad Marshall, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Santino Quaranta, Robbie Rogers,Jonathan Spector, Danny Szetela
