Post match quotes from the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team's match against Spain in the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Championship.
Head coach John Ellinger
On playing Brazil
"Confidence wise we feel we can play with Brazil, but they are a very good team. If we don’t play better than we did today we are in trouble. Hopefully we can find our game and we can play like we did when we opened the tournament against Korea."
On putting Freddy Adu in late
"Part of our plan was if we were down a goal was to put Freddy in with 25 minutes left to go try and get a draw and win the group. But, when you give up that second goal you even think about subbing him out at that point. Freddy is a young player and he needs to learn how to play in card situations. I think Freddy did fine with it. Freddy is a player who helps us keep possession and get a rhythm. If we would have started him I think we could have done a little better, but again Spain played very well today."
Forward Freddy Adu
On the game
"We just came out flat. That’s all I can say. Watching from the bench we just looked really flat and gave them too much respect. We can’t do that if we want to win."
On how to improve against Brazil
"We just have to come out and play our game. We know we can beat any team, it’s just a matter of coming out ready to play. We were a bit relaxed today and great teams don’t do that. We can’t do anything about what just happened, so we have to look ahead."
"I don’t know anything about the team. Brazil is Brazil. Whenever you play Brazil it is a big deal, so we just have to get ready."
