U.S. U-17s Defeat Guatemala 4-0 at Orange Bowl

MIAMI, Fla. (Saturday, February 3, 2001) - The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team continued their strong showing in the year 2001 this afternoon, defeating Guatemala 4-0 behind two header goals from defender Gray Griffin and yet another strike from powerful forward Ed Johnson. The youth match was played prior to the U.S. Men's National Team international match against Colombia at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

Johnson's goal came in the 21st minute and continued the forward's torrid 2001 scoring pace. The 16-year-old Nike Project-40 player now has six goals on the year, all coming in three season- opening victories this week. Johnson has 14 goals in 15 career international matches with the U-17s.

The U.S. jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on consecutive assists from midfielder Justin Mapp, the first on a corner kick to Griffin in the eighth minute (who nodded it home from close range), and the second on a nifty goal-mouth square pass that freed Johnson for an easy finish from six yards out in the 21st minute.

The half ended with the U.S. up 3-0 after forward Mike Magee beat Guatemalan goalkeeper Juan Paredes to a ball in the 37th minute and scored easily into an empty net from 22 yards out.

The fourth U.S. goal again came from the head of Gray who knocked in a leaping shot from three yards out after Ed Johnson had headed a corner-kick back across the goal mouth.

Earlier this week, the U.S. U-17s defeated CONCACAF rival Honduras in consecutive matches, winning 4-1 on Monday (Jan. 29) and 3-0 on Wednesday (Jan. 31) in Bradenton, Fla. The team has been lead by the inspired offensive play of both Ed Johnson and Santino Quaranta, both of whom recently signed with Nike Project-40 and are eligible for the MLS SuperDraft on Monday (Feb. 5).

Qualifying for the 2001 FIFA Under-17 World Championship being hosted by U.S. Soccer will be staged at Saint Louis University's Robert R. Hermann Stadium from April 18-22. The four-team, Group A qualifying tournament will feature the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team, as well as Canada and the second-place teams from CONCACAF's Central and Caribbean Zones. The six-game, round-robin tournament will send only the first place finisher to the 2001 Under-17 World Championship in Trinidad & Tobago in September.
