Cal Odyssey Earns Draw with Washington Premier FC, Seals Berth in Championship Match

CARSON, Calif. (July 15, 2009) – Cal Odyssey entered the third match day for the U-15/16 age group needing only a draw to advance to the championship match, and after a frantic second half, a 1-1 draw with Washington Premier FC was enough to clinch a place in Friday’s championship match. Cal Odyssey will take on the Derby County Wolves on Friday, July 17, at 7 p.m. PT, live on ESPN Classic, with the U-15/16 title on the line.

Against Washington Premier FC, both teams started out slowly, but the Tacoma, Wash.-based club controlled much of the ball early in the game. Despite their fairly constant possession, Cal Odyssey’s defense held strong to stifle any dangerous chances before they happened.

The game broke open in the second half as Washington Premier, knowing it needed a win to win the group, started pressing for a goal. Cal Odyssey was able to spring several well-designed counterattacks, with one leading to its first goal. As Odyssey pressed into the box, Villyan Bijev looked for the slotted ball. A Washington defender slid to block the cross, but the ball ended up hitting his hand and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Jose Segura coolly stepped up to take the penalty, and hit a simple ball to give his team the lead.
