U.S. WNT vs. the Netherlands: Post-Match Quotes - April 9, 2013

Post-Game Quote Sheet: U.S. Women's National Team vs. Netherlands
International Friendly
The Hague, Netherlands
April 9, 2013

U.S. head coach TOM SERMANNI
On the match:
“There were a lot of positives from the game. I thought tactically we did exactly what we tried to do. For much of the game, we pinned Holland in their own half, which was our aim. We created a considerable number of chances and probably should have made the score line a little more decisive, but there was some spirited defending from Holland as we expect from these teams. But when you consider we made 10 changes from the team that played against Germany, I was very pleased with the performance.”

On the depth of the U.S. team:
“From my perspective, it’s fantastic. We put a brand new team out tonight and there was no drop-off in the quality, no drop-off in the standard and no drop-off in the quality. It just shows how strong a squad we’ve got and how difficult it is to actually choose a starting eleven. The other great thing about our team is that we create chances, we score goals and we have a lot of potent players. These first three months have been really valuable for me and games like tonight are invaluable to continue to assess players.”

On the two-goal performance of Christen Press:
“She’s just a natural goal scorer. She just seems to get into goal scoring positions and her finishing is good. She’s a predatory striker and when you look at the number of quality strikers we have, it’s fantastic, and there’s real competition for places in that department.”

On the atmosphere at the match in The Hague:
“Great atmosphere. It’s one of the great things about coming to Europe and getting a good crowd, they appreciate and understand the game and really support their team. And at the same time, they appreciate the good play from our team, so playing in these environments is terrific for our players.”

On the match:
“They definitely came out hard. They gave us a good run. They battled and hit hard, so it was a good game. We kind of knew they would build through their outside backs and peel them out to the lines almost and sometimes we would get stretched, and sometimes they found the seams, but for the most part we did pretty well.”

On her getting two assists:
“I think we created a lot of chances and had some good crosses and were unfortunate a few times. Hopefully I can do a bit of scoring and a bit of providing, but today I was the providing.”

On heading into the NWSL season:
“It was good and now we got to our NWSL teams. It’s going to be different, but we’re excited. We’re glad that we had two good games and now we are starting a new journey with a women’s professional league back home.”

On the match:
“It was a really physical match, they were on our backs the whole game.  On the other side, we put them under a lot of pressure when they had the ball. I think we were prepared for them to play out the back and I think we had a set game plan on how we would pressure them and I think it worked very well tonight.”

On U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni making 10 changes to the starting lineup from last game:
“This team has an unbelievable talent for producing chances. No matter what is going in the game, we get in front of the goal. The team puts really great balls for the forwards to run onto and it’s a lot of fun to play.”

On getting a quality result with a different lineup from the Germany game on April 5:
“There’s a lot of fantastic players on the team and no matter who is on the field, we work so hard, we try to make each other look, and at the end of the day, we can come out with a totally new lineup and still put up a good result.”

On getting denied on a few chances early and coming back to score twice:
“Sometimes as a forward, your first opportunity, you just want smash it in the goal and if it doesn’t go your way, you just have to think that next time you will score. Luckily tonight I was able to that and ended up with a good result.”

On her second goal on a nice individual dribbling run:
“I think that sometimes the defender sort of plays it the way you want them to. I sort of saw the play a little bit before and I saw how her feet were set so I was able to dribble past her and you’re always happy when the ball goes in the back of the net. Every time I put on this jersey, it’s fun and it’s always and amazing opportunity to finish your chances for this team.”

U.S. midfielder TOBIN HEATH
On the match:
“It was overall a good match for us. I think we saw a different kind of side in the Netherlands wanting to possess the ball and knock it around a bit, but I think we adjusted our style to get some goals. It took us a while to get into a rhythm, but overall I thought we did pretty well.”

On her goal off an assist from Sydney Leroux:

“Syd was kind of wreaking havoc all night. She made a little run down the flank and was able to slot the ball back and Press was running onto it. I told her to let it go, and she did thankfully, and I was able to finish it.”

On the value of this two-game trip to Europe:
“We still got a ways to go to the World Cup and facing these quality European teams will only help us and will only allow us to grow as a team and identify the types of players who can emerge in these types of matches.”
