Amirgy Pineda Invited to Nike Chance Global Showcase in UK
YNT Player and National Combine Attendee Traveling to St George’s Park to the Nike Academy from Nov. 1-4
CHICAGO (Oct. 30, 2013) – U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team midfielder Amirgy Pineda recently accepted an invitation to take part in the Nike Chance Global Showcase. The event will be held Nov. 1-4 at St. George’s Park, United Kingdom, home of the FA and Nike Academy.
Nike Chance is a one-of-a-kind global football talent search that gives young footballers (over 16 years of age) from around the world an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of elite coaches and mentors from the top of the sport. Since 2010, Nike Chance has provided elite training opportunities to thousands of talented players, 19 of whom have made the dream of becoming a professional a reality.
“I was really excited and speechless,” Pineda said after receiving his invitation. “These opportunities are what you work for, so I’m hoping to have a great experience from this and learn some new stuff to become a better soccer player.”
At the Nike Academy, selected players will have the opportunity to prove their professional potential as they will be assessed on their technical abilities through various drills and match competition. Matches will be observed by the full coaching panel and Nike Academy scouts.
Pineda is a midfielder from Santa Ana, Calif., plays club ball at nearby Fullerton Rangers and has been a part of the Youth National Team picture with the U-14 and U-15 Boys’ National Team, and U-17 Men’s National Team. He was also called up for a Sept. 22-29 camp with the U.S. U-18 MNT after participating in the National Combine held Aug. 9-13 at Nike’s World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., earlier this year.
Pineda spent approximately a year away from the YNT circuit between the U-15s and U-17s, but since this March he has been a regular fixture on the National Team level.
“It was always my goal to get back in, and mentally I think I have become a better soccer player,” Pineda said. “Every time I get on the field in practice, I’m keeping in mind how to take advantage of these opportunities to play with top-level guys and learn new things to make yourself better and also make your teammates better.”
Over the summer, Pineda and the U-17 MNT won the Niigata International Tournament in Japan. Pineda started in the tournament finale on July 15 against the Niigata All-Stars as the USA posted a 2-0 victory to cap off a 3-0-0 performance.
