Post Match Quotes: U.S. WNT vs. Guatemala

U.S. head coach PIA SUNDHAGE

On the match:
“I’m very happy that we executed what we talked about before the game, to get Shannon Boxx and Carli Lloyd involved. We added Megan Rapinoe and she mixed it up well with those two and things happened in the middle of the field. Our speed of play was a little bit faster and you can see how effective it is.”

On mixing up her lineups and giving players minutes:
“Every single performance has been good, so I am confident with all the players we put out there. Our job is to put out the best team for the day, but also look at the bigger picture to make sure we qualify for the World Cup.”

On importance of the match:
“We’re on to the semifinals. That was the most important news of the day, but I’m happy that we could come together and score some nice goals.”

On scoring her first career hat trick:
“I was fortunate enough to find myself around the net and score three very unique goals for me, but at the end of the day, it’s more about reaching the semifinals and making it to the World Cup.”

On pairing with Alex Morgan for the final 52 minutes of the match:
“She came in off the bench and worked very hard and made my job easier, so it was fun playing with her today.”

On coming out at the end of the first half:
“I talked with Pia in between these two games and told her how tired I was after the last game. At this point it’s more about recovery and getting players ready for the games. Since the game was a bit in hand with the four goal lead, she subbed me out and I think it’s great because not only do I get to rest, but it gives other players more experience and Alex Morgan came in and scored a goal. If you’re a forward, it’s hard to get the rhythm if you come on the last 20 minutes, so it’s great for some of these younger players to get that experience and also get me some much needed rest for the rest of the tournament. The most important game is the semifinal so all of the starters need to be at their best for that game.”

U.S. midfielder CARLI LLOYD

On the match:
“It was a little bit of a different game (than from the first match against Haiti). Boxxy and I had a lot of space and opportunity to receive the ball and play some short combinations with (Megan) Rapinoe pitching in. Every game is going to be different, you are going to get different tactics from the other team, and in this game the middle was really open and we were able to get some good rhythm.”

On the match:
“It was great to see some players come off the bench and contribute. We are fighting for a spot in the World Cup and that will take everyone contributing on and off the field.”
