Across the Academy – Feb. 26, 2014

February Futsal Wraps Up for U-13/14s: The Development Academy’s final three U-13/14 regional futsal events took place over the Feb. 22-23 weekend.

  • At the Austin Sports Center in Cedar Park, Texas, the Dallas Texans and Solar Chelsea SC went a perfect 3-0-0 in Group 1 and 2 White, respectively.
  • At Competitive Edge Sports in King of Prussia, Pa., three teams posted a 3-0-0 mark: the Philadelphia Union (Group 1 White), Match Fit (Group 2 White) and Players Development Academy (Group 3 White).
  • At Connecticut Sports Arena in New Milford, Conn., BW Gottschee was the standout club in two groups, touting 3-0-0 performances in the Group 2 White and Group 2 Red and outscoring its opposition by a combined 50 goals. New York Soccer Club won Group 1 Red with a three-win effort.

Referees Enrich Futsal Knowledge: As players benefit from futsal, the same holds true for the referees who participated in the Academy’s U-13/14 regional events. caught up with Platinum Program referees Lance VanHaitsma and Elvis Mahmutovic, as well as FIFA futsal instructor Ed Marco and FIFA futsal referee Shane Butler, on how the futsal environment helped their management and overall knowledge of the game.

ACADEMY QUICK HITS (Weekend of Feb. 22-23):

  • West Conference: Real So Cal’s U-17/18s moved ahead of Chivas USA into third place in the Southwest Division on the strength of a 2-0 victory last Saturday. John Requejo and Spencer Held tallied second-half goals as Real So Cal improved to 8-4-2 (1.86 points per game). Chivas USA is now 8-4-4 (1.75 points per game).
  • Central Conference: The Texas Rush and Texans SC Houston split their Saturday slate, with the Rush U-17/18 side opening the day with a 3-1 victory and Texans SC Houston’s U-15/16s rallying for a 2-1 victory. Texas Rush’s Denzel Ward had two goals in the U-17/18 match and Texans SC Houston’s Daltyn Knutson scored two goals in a three-minute span to lead the U-15/16 squad.
  • East Conference: Chargers Soccer Club’s U-15/16 team was two games under .500 in late November, but the squad has been red-hot since. Chargers SC extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3), most recently notching a 1-0 victory against the North Carolina Fusion on Sunday. Allen Lewis scored his fourth goal of the season in the 15th minute as Chargers SC moved to 13-8-5 (1.69 points per game).

  • Development Academy Regular Season: The three-day Feb. 28-March 2 weekend includes 111 scheduled matches, with a combined 74 games at the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups and 33 fixtures at the U-13/14 level.
