U.S. Under-20 Women Fall to Russia Women's National Team, 2-0, at Cyprus Tournament

LARNACA, Cyprus (March 7, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team lost 2-0 to the full Russia Women’s National Team at the Cyprus Women’s Cup 2008 in its “non-tournament” match, and will face the Netherlands on March 10 for a spot in the championship. The USA, which must win its three-team group to make the title game, won its first group match over Scotland on March 5 by a 2-1 score.

Because the tournament features six teams, each country is playing a “non-tournament” match during the competition, giving each nation a chance to play four total games -- two group games, a non-tournament game and a placement game -- while in Cyprus.

U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco made seven changes to the starting lineup that beat Scotland, giving his entire roster playing time, but the young Americans ran into a determined and physical Russian team as the countries combined for 33 fouls.

“One never wants to lose but this was a useful game for our team’s development,” said DiCicco. “Clearly our lack of experience was exploited by the Russians, especially on the first goal which was a counterattack started when they cleared a ball of their own goal line.”

The USA battled a tall and fast Russia side scoreless through the first half, but Russia, ranked 15th in the world, got a goal one minute into the second half from Natalia Mokshanova. The Russians then got a clincher from substitute Alla Rogova in the 69th minute just five minutes after she had come on.

“Our players will grow from playing good teams such as Russia,” added DiCicco. “Russia was very good technically, had good athleticism and showed the soccer pedigree to capitalize on our mistakes. I was not discouraged by our effort, which was very impressive. Our team showed great fighting spirit trying to get the equalizer and nearly did. Probably our biggest disappointment was not finishing quality chances, but our goal is to beat Holland and get into the final.”

The U.S. U-20s are currently in preparations for qualifying for the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Chile from Nov. 20-Dec. 7.
