Real Salt Lake AZ Claims Second Place in Group 2 After Defeating CASL Chelsea FC Academy

MILWAUKEE (July 14, 2011) – Real Salt Lake claimed second place in Group 2 after defeating CASL Chelsea FC Academy 3-1 with goals by Jose Navarro, Joshua Goss and Ben Spencer. The win elevated Real Salt Lake above North Carolina Fusion, who lost to group winners PA Classics.

CASL Chelsea FC Academy struck first, but Real Salt Lake roared back and scored three unanswered goals to capture their only victory of the group phase. Real Salt Lake will face Real So Cal for third place on Saturday, July 16, at 6 p.m. CT. CASL will take on the Dallas Texans earlier that day at 1 p.m. CT in the game for seventh place.

Real Salt Lake dominated the beginning of the first half, seeing many scoring opportunities go unfulfilled. Ben Spencer took a crack in the eighth minute, firing a shot from the top of the penalty box that flew over the goal. In the 15th minute, he snatched control of the ball and dribbled down the end line on the right side and leveled a deep-angle drive at CASL goalkeeper Everett McCord, who stood firm to make the save.

CASL had their first opportunity of the game in the 19th minute when Josh Hong found himself isolated one-on-one on the right flank. Hong hit a low stinger that Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Joey Speshock deflected into the path of his defender to avoid any further danger.

CASL finally capitalized on their efforts just before the half when Kellen Foster ripped the ball away from Real Salt Lake at the top of his own penalty box, initiating a counter attack by chipping the ball to Andrew Park. He used his speed to dribble through defenders and let loose a drive from 30 yards out that flew into the back right corner, putting CASL up heading into the interval.

Real Salt Lake came out of the locker room pressuring CASL from the start. In the 62st minute, Spencer caught McCord out of the goal and took a shot that was saved by a defender. Jose Navarro, who entered the game just four minutes earlier, collected the rebound and planted the equalizing goal.

In the 68th minute, it was Spencer again who exploited the right flank, this time finding Kainoa Bailey. His effort deflected of McCord, and Joshua Goss scooped up the rebound and put the game-winning goal into the lower right corner.

Three minutes later, CASL nearly equalized when Foster sent the ball to Alexander Olofson, who took a shot from the top of the penalty box that sent the goalkeeper sprawling but inched just wide. Man of the Match Ben Spencer would add the insurance goal for Real Salt Lake in the last minute of regulation time. Goss and Bailey had an excellent passing sequence going down the left side of the field. Goss was able to send a pass off to Spencer, whose effort found the back right corner of the goal and ensured the Real Salt Lake AZ win, sending them to the third place match.
