Development Academy Winter Showcase Features Select Team Action on Dec. 4

DAY ONE IN THE BOOKS: Day One of the 2010 Development Academy Winter Showcase wrapped up with the highly anticipated U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team game against Brazil. Though the game ended in a scoreless draw, it did not lack for action, and finished with the U.S. holding on to first place in the tournament standings. It was the last of 42 games on the day. On Saturday, 60 games will take place across the 18 fields at the Reach 11 Complex, highlighted by two Development Academy Select Team games.

MORE ABOUT SELECT TEAMS: Development Academy Select Teams are comprised of players chosen by the scouting network, Technical Advisors and youth national team coaches. There will be two teams of players born in 1992 and 1993 who will play on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. Immediately following that game, two groups of players born in 1994 and 1995 will match up. The game is expected to have more than 300 college and national team scouts in attendance. Full rosters from all four teams are available by clicking here.

Quick Hits from Day One:

  • Seven different goal scorers netted for CASL Chelsea FC U-17/18 on Friday in a 9-1 defeat of Met Oval. Only Herbet Riviera and Bryan Roque scored two goals for the North Carolina club.
  • Reigning U-17/18 Finals Week champion Vardar picked up a 4-0 win against Potomac to begin its weekend.
  • Those were the only two U-17/18 matches to be decided by more than two goals.
  • Of the 20 U-15/16 games on Friday, only six were decided by more than one goal.
  • Empire United, who battled through four feet of snow in Buffalo, N.Y., to arrive in Phoenix on Thursday, topped the Colorado Rapids 4-0 in the U-15/16 age group.
  • Shattuck-St. Mary’s Academy picked up a win and a draw between its two teams in their first appearance at a Development Academy Showcase. The U-15/16 age group drew with Match Fit Chelsea while the U-17/18 age group earned a 2-1 victory.
  • The club formerly known as BW Gottschee played its first two Showcase games as Cosmos Academy East, picking up a 2-2 draw in the U-15/16 age group and a 1-1 draw in the older age group.

NIKE INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES STANDINGS: The U-17 Men’s National Teams from the U.S. and Turkey are tied for the top of the standings in the Nike International Friendlies, both having earned 2-1 wins against Korea Republic and 0-0 draws with Brazil. If Brazil ties or loses to Korea Republic, or wins by exactly one goal and the U.S. draws with Turkey on Sunday, there will be a drawing of lots to determine the champion of the Nike International Friendlies. This marks the first time that the event is being played in a tournament format.
