Preston Zimmerman Scores Two Goals to Lead U.S. U-17 '88 MNT to Victory in Only Match of Nike Friendlies
BRADENTON, Fla. (December 1, 2005) — The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National got two goals from forward Preston Zimmerman to defeat the Under-18 Dallas Texans to win their only game of the 2005 Nike Friendlies.
The match was televised by Fox Soccer Channel and will be broadcast on December 20 at 11 p.m. ET.
The U.S. fell behind early when the Texans struck in the fourth minute when Stephen Brown pounced on a loose ball in the U.S. area and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Diego Restrepo in the fourth minute.
Despite the early setback, the U.S. responded with two goals to take the lead into halftime. David Arvizu quickly pulled the U.S. even by scoring a stunning bicycle-kick goal three minutes later that would no doubt have been a U.S. Soccer “Best Goal” candidate. Arvizu chased down a Zimmerman header that bounced at the top of the six-yard box, one-touching it over his head before turning 180 degrees and performing a picture-perfect bicycle, blasting the ball past the outstretched hands of the Texan ‘keeper.
In the 19th minute, Zimmerman buried a cross from Ryan Soroka to provide the U.S. with their first lead. Soroka received the ball on the right sideline and dribbled in towards goal along the endline before slotting the ball across for Zimmerman’s one-touch redirection. Soroka was the best player on the field during the match as he caused numerous problems for the Texan defense with his passing and dribbling skills.
Former U.S. Under-17 MNT player Jonathan Villanueva pulled the Texans back two minutes into the second half. Dribbling towards goal on the right side, Villanueva unleashed a 20-yard strike that zipped past substitute goalkeeper Bryant Rueckner into the upper left corner.
Zimmerman provided the heroics with the game-winner in the 55th minute, but the build-up before his tap-in should be heralded. Kyle Nakazawa collected the ball in midfield and dribbled forward before laying it out wide left for Soroka, who crossed it to the far post to Omar Gonzalez. The six-foot-four forward headed the ball over the outstretched hands of the ‘keeper along the goal line, giving Zimmerman an easy finish.
