U-17s Draw 1-1 in Opening Match of FA Tournament

YEADING, England (Aug. 30, 2006) - The U.S. Under-17 '90 Men's National Team drew 1-1 with Portugal this afternoon in the opening match of the FA Under-17 Friendly International Tournament.

Midfielder Axel Levry scored the opening goal in the 16th minute off an assist from Bryan Dominguez, but Portugal was able to find the equalizer in injury time.

The U.S. will meet England next on Friday, Sept. 1 in Aldershot.

The U.S. outshot Portugal 18-8 during the match and was on the attack for most of the first half as they held Portugal to just a single shot. Forward Ellis McLoughlin had a couple of great chances but was unlucky to find the back of the net.

Danny Barerra started the attack that led to the opening goal, brining the ball up the left side and crossing it into the penalty area. Dominguez got a head to the ball and flicked it back to Levry at the far post and the midfielder buried it past Ruca.

In the second half, Portugal was able to finally put some pressure on U.S. goalkeeper Josh Lambo, but they were unable to break through off a free kick until three minutes into extra time.  The ball was sent in from midfield and the U.S. defense failed to clear it out of danger, allowing the ball to fall to Dinis and the midfielder hit a shot that deflected off a U.S. defender and got past Lambo.
