Post-Match Quote Sheet: U.S. MNT vs. Brazil

U.S. Men’s National Team forward HERCULEZ GOMEZ
On his goal:
“It was great combination play down the left side. Fabian [Johnson] had a very good run, beat his man, played a square ball and I had the easy job – just pushed it in.”

On what the team learned from a tough game:
“We’ve got to be smart, filter out the bad and take in the good. I think the 4-1 scoreline wasn’t really indicative of the way the game went. There were stretches of that game where we controlled the tempo and we were getting after it. They finished off their chances. That’s really the difference.”

On the benefits of playing tough opponents:
“They don’t get any easier. You play Brazil, it’s not an easy game. We’re trying to learn from this, we’re trying to get better and use it to our benefit. We’ve got qualifiers coming up and I think it’s going to help us.”

U.S. Men’s National Team forward LANDON DONOVAN:
On the team’s performance:
“It’s a little hard to say you’re relatively satisfied after losing 4-1 but I think, all things considered, we played OK. We fell asleep on a set piece and got punished for it. We fell asleep on the Marcelo goal a little bit and got punished for it. The other two goals I think were probably aided by poor officiating and it’s unfortunate. But I think the way we played, the chances we created – not many teams create that many chances against Brazil. I think we were a little unlucky not to score and maybe need to be a little sharper to score.”

On Herculez Gomez:
“Herc’s so active and he gets in good spots. Every time we get the ball, he’s in front of the goal and he wants to score. He’s hungry. I thought he was very good tonight. He created a number of chances and maybe on another night he’d score a couple more.”

U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder MICHAEL BRADLEY:
On attacking Brazil through Fabian Johnson:
“I think when you can use your outside backs and have them get forward and use their movement to create space and opportunities, that’s a big plus. When Stevie [Cherundolo] and Fabian are playing outside back for us, that’s something that they both do very well. They read the right times to get themselves forward and I think the more we can use them and their abilities in those ways, I think that’s going to help us.”
