Rejuvenated Honduras Drops Canada 2-0; Guatemala Surprises Mexico With 80th Minute Equalizer

HERSHEY, Pa. (Sunday, April 23, 2000) - On this Easter Sunday, which also served as Day Two of opening round competition in the CONCACAF 2000 Olympics Qualifying Tournament at Hersheypark Stadium, things in both groups got a lot more interesting after today's results. In front of a mixed crowd of 8,580 fans that represented Honduras, Mexico and Guatemala, a rejuventaed Honduras side dropped Canada 2-0 and Mexico was surprised by an 80th minute equalizer by Guatemala.

Honduras' opening goal came with Hesler Phillips looping a soft shot over Mike Franks, after the Canadian goalkeeper had stopped but failed to control a hard shot from 20 yards by Honduran captain Ivan Guerrero.

Canada had a chance to tie the match came in the 59th minute when Jason Bent sprung Jim Brennan on a break into the left side of the penalty area, but Brennan unleashed a left-footed drive that was well saved by Honduran 'keeper Noel Valladares.

After a headed shot by Canada's Kevin McKenna came back off the crossbar, Honduras iced the win with a breakaway tally by Luis Ramirez. Jaime Rosales picked up his second yellow card of the tournament, and pending referee confirmation, will sit out Honduras' next match should they advance.

Canada will next face Group D-leading United States on Tuesday (April 25) at 8 p.m. With three points and a +3 goal differential, the U.S. U-23's need just a tie to win the group. Meanwhile, for Canada to advance to the semi-finals, they need at least a 2-0 win over the U.S.

"They're a good side. I know basically all of the players on that team. I know how they play," Canadian defender Jason Bent - who plays for the Colorado Rapids of MLS - said of the U.S. team. "We have to put this game behind us and look forward to Tuesday."

In the second game, things started poorly for Guatemala. Captain Carlos Ruiz, who scored both of the team's goals on Friday night, left the match in the 25th minute after his right leg buckled underneath him (right MCL sprain). Mexico's goal came off the head of Joaquin Beltran, who out-jumped a group of players in the goalkeeper area to finish a free kick from the left wing from Hector Altamarino.

But Guatemala roared back in the second half, with their best scoring chance coming in the 56th minute when Carlos Quiñonez rocked the crossbar on a free kick from 28 yards. The equalizer came with a well-placed, dipping shot from Freddy Garcia in the 80th minute that floated off the hands of Mexican goalkeeper Adrian Zermeño and fell into the goal. With the tie and four points in their two opening round games, Guatemala is now the first of the six teams to advance to the semifinals.

"At some point, it was as if we believed that our shirts would win the game," said Mexican Coach Gustavo Vargas, expressing disappointment in what he felt was the team's uninspired performance.

To win Group E, Mexico needs to defeat Panama by more than two goals in Tuesday's first game, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. (ET) at Hersheypark Stadium.
