CHICAGO (Saturday, December 22, 2001) - U.S. Men's National Team captain Claudio Reyna scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to lead Sunderland to a 1-0 home victory over Everton in the English Premier League on Saturday. The goal came in the 28-year-old midfielder's home debut for Sunderland in front of 48,013 fans at the Stadium of Light. It was Reyna's second appearance for the club since he agreed to an American-record transfer fee of $6.8 million from Glasgow Rangers back on December 7.
Played in blizzard like conditions, Reyna was stopped by Everton goalkeeper Steve Simonsen after he redirected a dipping cross from high-scoring Sunderland forward Kevin Phillips. Sunderland's Jason McAteer collected the rebound of that shot to send the ball back into the penalty area where it eventually fell to the New Jersey-native who scored from point-blank range.
Moore Starts for Everton
Joe-Max Moore started his first league game of the season for Everton in the loss and came close to scoring, but had a shot saved by Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen just before halftime. Moore, who played all 90 minutes in the defeat, scored his first goal of the year for Everton last week in a 1-0 victory over Derby County.
Friedel Earns Victory for Blackburn
U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel lead Blackburn to a 2-0 victory at Charlton Athletic, ending Blackburn's league winless streak at five games. The victory was the ninth of the year for Friedel and Blackburn during the 2001-02 season, which includes four Cup victories. Friedel has played every second of the season for Blackburn in their return to the Premier League.
