U.S. U-17 MNT Rallies to 1-1 Draw With Brazil at Nike International Friendlies

PHOENIX (Dec. 5, 2009) – The U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team overcame a halftime deficit to draw with Brazil 1-1 in the second match of the 2009 Nike International Friendlies in Phoenix. A counter attack led to the game’s first goal as Brazil scored just seconds before the halftime whistles, but the young U.S. squad leveled the score in the 75th minute.

Brazil’s clinical counter attack began with a long ball played out of the back by defender Luis Gustavo. Gustavo’s curling ball was played perfectly down the touchline for Leandro, who sped past his defender to get to the goal line. From the right side, he played a cross that fell to an on rushing Guilherme, who powered his header toward the near post and past U.S. goalkeeper Fernando Pina.

The U.S. didn’t back down, fighting for the equalizer and keeping Brazil on their toes early in the second half. In the 75th minute, Nicholas Melos won the ball inside his attacking end and touched it through for Kellen Gulley. Gulley did well to beat his defender with his first touch and get inside the box, finishing his low shot hard into the far post.
