U.S. U-23 WNT Falls to England 2-1 in Second Match at the 2012 Four Nations Tournament

LA MANGA, Spain (Feb. 29, 2012) – The U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team fell to England 2-1 in its second match at the Four Nations Tournament. Forward Stephanie Ochs scored the USA’s lone goal in the 59th minute, but the Americans could not find an equalizer over the last third of the match.

England got on the board early as Toni Duggan struck a 40-yard chip shot that managed to fall just out of the reach of U.S. goalkeeper Adrianna Franch in the 10th minute.

England struck for their second goal early in the second half after drawing a foul about 45 yards from the U.S. goal. On the ensuing free kick, Gemma Bonner was able to get her head on the serve and drive it past Franch.

Although the U.S. controlled play during second half – the Americans had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game – only one goal came. The USA earned a free kick from the left side near the end line and defender Lauren Barnes drove her service across the face of the goal, where leaping midfielder Amber Brooks got on the end of the cross. She sent the ball back across the England goal, where an opportune Stephanie Ochs beat one England defender to bury her shot to the right of the England ‘keeper.

Next up for the USA is its final game of the tournament against the Norway U-23 Women’s National Team on March 1. The USA defeated Sweden 2-0 on Feb. 26 in its first game of the competition.
