- All Matches to be Played at National Sports Center – Papendal, Arhem, Netherlands
The U.S. will play first round games against Russia on Oct. 23, and Scotland on Oct. 25, at the National Sports Center – Papendal, in Arhem, Netherlands.
The Americans begin the tournament against Russia who are ranked as one of the top two teams in the world (alongside Ukraine) and were the Gold medalist team at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics (with Ukraine earning Gold medals at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games).
The U.S. team, led by head coach Jay Hoffman, has one of the youngest squads in the team's history with the average age being just under 22 years of age. “It's a great opportunity for us,” said Hoffman. “We have a very young group and we're looking forward to the international competition.”
Scotland, the second match for the U.S., was recently named as host of the 2010 European Championship to take place in Glasgow at the Toryglen Regional Football Center from Aug. 15 to 29. The tournament will feature ten countries including Russia, Ukraine, England and hosts Scotland. Scottish FA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said, "We are all delighted that we have been awarded this tournament. It is an endorsement of our growing reputation in CP Football (paralympic soccer), but also recognition of Glasgow's excellence in hosting football events."
Group A consists of Ukraine, Ireland and Ghana. Group C drew Iran, Netherlands and Canada, and Group D includes Brazil, Australia and Japan. The top two teams in each of the four groups will advance to the next round.
Team arrivals and player classifications begin Oct. 20 with tournament competition running from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31.
The U.S. team recently concluded resident camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The camp began on Aug. 1 and continued through Aug. 13.
