U.S. Soccer to Host National Coaching Symposium in Charleston, S.C., from November 15-17
CHICAGO (Wednesday, October 9, 2002) - U.S. Soccer will host a National Coaching Symposium in Charleston, S.C., from November 15-17 in conjunction with the Under-20 CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament. The symposium, which will be led by four of U.S. Soccer’s Men’s National Team coaches, will take place at the College of Charleston and will coincide with the Under-20 CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament that is taking place in Charleston’s Blackbaud Stadium from November 13-17.
The symposium will include a mixture of field sessions and lectures, as well as the chance to watch the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team take on El Salvador on November 15. Registration for the symposium includes a ticket to the doubleheader on November 15 that concludes with the U.S. – El Salvador match.
U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach Thomas Rongen, who will be coaching the U.S. squad in the CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament, will be one of four National Team coaches speaking at the symposium and will make a presentation at the clinic on Nov. 16. The featured presenters for the symposium include:
- John Ellinger, U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team Head Coach
- Thomas Rongen, U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team Head Coach
- Glenn Myernick, U.S. Men’s National Team Assistant Coach
- Peter Mellor, National Goalkeeping Coach and National Staff Coach
“This symposium is an amazing opportunity for coaches to interact with four of our National Team coaches,” said Ellinger. “With the Under-20 qualifying tournament taking place at the same time in the same city, participants will also have the chance to watch some of the best young players from the U.S., Canada, El Salvador and Haiti. The combination of the two makes this a very unique and very special event for coaches of all age levels.”
U.S. Soccer is hosting the qualifying tournament for the first time in more than 20 years, and the U.S. team, which will be guided by Rongen, will be trying to qualify for a fourth-straight FIFA World Youth Championship for the first time in U.S. Soccer history.
The symposium’s theme “U.S. National Teams – Where are they now?" will be featured throughout the clinic. Registration for the symposium is open to all coaches, and “A” Licensed coaches will receive two Continuing Education credits (CEU’s) towards the renewal of their license. The cost of pre-registration for the symposium (prior to November 8th) is $100 for members and $150 for non-members. On-site registration is $125 for members and $175 for non-members.
