U.S. Soccer to Host Coaching Symposium in Conjunction with the Nike Friendlies at IMG Academy from December 7-9

CHICAGO (November 14, 2006) – U.S. Soccer will host the sixth edition of the Nike Friendlies Coaching Symposium in conjunction with the 2006 Nike Friendlies taking place at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida from Dec. 7 through Dec. 10. The symposium includes nightly presentations on Dec. 7 and 8, as well as a match analysis of a U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team match on Dec. 9 at the IMG Academy.

The Coaching Symposium will feature interaction with several of U.S. Soccer’s National Team coaches and is highlighted by a discussion with U.S. Men’s National Team Assistant Coach Curt Onalfo on Dec. 7.

The symposium will also give participating coaches the opportunity to watch the Nike Friendlies.
The U.S. Under-15 and Under-17 Men’s National Teams will join more than 49 of the top Nike club teams from across the nation in a four-day event that begins on Thursday, Dec. 7, and ends on Sunday, Dec. 10. Each team will play three games in an environment which stresses quality soccer and player development over wins and losses. Tournament standings are not kept during the competition.

The Coaching Symposium opens on Thursday, Dec. 7, with a presentation by U.S. Under-17 MNT Head Coach John Hackworth. U.S MNT Assistant Coach, Curt Onalfo, will also present on the first night, addressing the United States participation in this past summer’s World Cup.

The evening of Dec. 8 will feature a presentation on the UEFA Conference from U.S. Under-18 MNT Head Coach and Director of Coaching Education & Youth Development, Bob Jenkins. U.S. WNT Assistant Coach Phil Wheddon will conclude the evening’s presentations.

On Saturday afternoon, coaches will gather and analyze the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team game at the IMG Academy. U.S. U-17 MNT head coach John Hackworth will discuss the team’s game plan prior to the match and U.S. National Staff Coaches Bob Jenkins, Roberto Lopez, Juan Carlos Michia and Rene Miramontes will lead a match analysis during the game.

The nightly symposium sessions will take place at the IMG Academy Mental Conditioning Building and are expected to last approximately two hours.

Registration is open to all coaches, and “A” Licensed coaches will receive one Continuing Education Credit per session for their attendance at the symposium. There is no fee to attend any of the symposium sessions or the U.S. Soccer Nike Men’s Friendlies. Questions may be directed to the U.S. Soccer Coaching Department at or via fax at 312-808-9708.
