Post Game Quote Sheet: U.S. WNT vs. Japan

U.S. Head Coach PIA SUNDHAGE
On the team’s overall performance:
“The first half was a little bit too slow. I didn’t like the way we played too direct and we didn’t change the point of attack, but we talked about it at halftime. This was a game that we trained to escape pressure and the players did a good job of swinging it wide in the second half. It was different game from the first to second half. There were a couple of times that Carli Lloyd forced a turnover and she played a good ball in front of her and creates some chances.”

On the goals the U.S. has scored against Japan:
"Tonight two different players scored goals and both of them were great goals. We gain confidence when we look at the four goals we scored against Japan over these two games. That is something we are going to talk about and watch over and over again. We can gain some confidence just by watching."

On Heather O’Reilly’s goal and assist:
“That’s exactly what we need her to do, to be unpredictable and run at people. The team needs to find her and at the same time she needs to have an attacking touch and beat that player. She had some good crosses and a fantastic goal today.”

U.S. Midfielder HEATHER O’REILLY
On playing back in North Carolina where she played her college ball at UNC:
“I absolutely love this place. I spent four amazing years down here at college. This is just a great place for soccer; a great soccer community and a great venue. I always love coming back here. My first goal was scored here and I scored tonight so I’m a happy Tar Heel.

On her performance:
“I try to bring my highest level to every field I step on, but I think that with such a supportive fan base here that always helps as well.”

On the team performance:
“Every player has their strengths and you try to play to them. And for me that’s about taking players on one-v-one, getting to the end line and getting quality crosses in. That was my objective for tonight and we were lucky enough to set up the first goal in that fashion. The icing on the cake was that I was able to get one for myself as well. “

On the team performance building towards the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup:
“I think that we do feel good. I think that every game that we’ve been playing we have been gaining a little bit of momentum and continuing to layer in some different levels of sophistication in our attack. It’s not always going to be better and better but we are hoping to continue climb and reach new heights as a team. Tonight the positives that we can take from it are that we created a lot of chances and we put them on frame. Our set pieces were very dangerous and the no goals against is fantastic.”
