- Olivia Klei Scores Twice in Second Half for USA, Samantha Johnson Opens Score At End of First Half
- U-15 GNT Takes on Cal-South U-16 ODP on Friday, September 29, at 10 a.m. at The HDC
CARSON, California (Sept. 28, 2006) – The U.S. Under-15 Girls’ National Team opened the Women’s Nike Friendlies with a 3-1 victory against the U-16 Colorado Rush in the first match for a U.S. youth team at the tournament.
The U.S. U-15s out-shot the Rush 24-5 for the match and put a remarkable 14 shots on goal. Flank midfielder Olivia Klei scored twice for the USA in the second half while forward Samantha Johnson opened the scoring with a goal just a minute before halftime.
Johnson’s goal came after midfielder Mariah Nogueira won a head ball off a goal kick, sending it to Rachel Nuzzolese, who fed Johnson in the left side of the penalty area. The U.S. forward slid to shoot as a defender closed in and slipped her left-footed shot into the lower right corner to give the U-15s a 1-0 lead.
Klei doubled it in the 67th minute as midfielder Brianne Rodriguez slipped her a pass behind the defense deep in the left side of the penalty area. Klei cracked her shot from a stiff angle, roofing her chance into the net at the near post. She added her second in the 73rd minute, this time after forward Victoria DiMartino slipped a ball behind the defense into the left side of the penalty area. This time Klei went far post, slotting her shot on the ground into the lower right corner.
The Rush pulled a goal back in the 77th minute after U.S. goalkeeper Lindsay Dickerson bobbled a cross in traffic and Britni Bothwell smacked in the rebound from close range.
In the true spirit of the Nike Friendlies, there were only four fouls called on each team.
