CHICAGO (Feb. 10, 2012) – The kickoff times and venues for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the 2012 Algarve Cup in Portugal have been confirmed, with the eight-time Algarve champions opening against Denmark on Feb. 29 at Estádio Municipal in Lagos. Kickoff time is 5 p.m. local / 12 p.m. ET. Fans can follow all the U.S. matches on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.
The USA’s second Group B match against Norway on March 2 will also be in Lagos (kickoff at 3 p.m. local / 10 a.m. ET). The Americans will finish group play with a match against Japan on March 5 at Estádio Algarve in Faro with a start time of 2:10 p.m. local / 9:10 a.m. ET.
The meeting with Japan will mark the first between the teams since the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final on July 17 of last year in Frankfurt, Germany. This will be Japan’s second trip to the Algarve Cup. The USA and Japan met in last year’s tournament with the USA winning 2-1 in its first group match in Vila Real de San Antonio.
The meeting with Norway will be the 14th at the Algarve Cup, the most against any opponent. The USA is 8-4-1 all-time against Norway during the annual tournament. This will be the 10th meeting between the USA and Denmark at the Algarve Cup with the Americans holding an 8-1-0 record that includes two victories in tournament championship games in 2007 and 2008.
After not attending last year’s Algarve Cup due to Women’s World Cup preparations, Germany returns and will head Group A that also features Sweden, Iceland and China.
This will be the USA’s 17th trip to the Algarve Cup where it has won the tournament in seven out of the past nine years. The USA will arrive in Portugal on Feb. 21 and train for a little over a week before opening the tournament against the Danes.
The U.S. team must win its group to earn a place in the championship game, which will be played on March 7 at Estádio Algarve, a 30,000-seat venue built for the 2004 European Championships. The venues and kickoff times for all the placement matches have yet to be confirmed, but this year’s group games will take place in five small stadiums spread out along the southern coast of Portugal along with two group games held at the main stadium on March 5 – USA vs. Japan and host Portugal vs. Republic of Ireland.
Since the expansion from eight to 12 teams eight years ago, the Algarve Cup format has been as follows: The teams in Group A and B will compete for the title as the group winners will play in the championship game. The two second-place finishers in Groups A and B will play for third place while the third-place finishers will play for fifth. The Group C teams will compete for a chance to play for spots 7-12 as the winner of Group C will play the best fourth-place team from Groups A or B for seventh place. The second-place team in Group C will play the worst fourth-place team from Groups A or B for ninth place and the third- and fourth-place finishers in Group C will play each other for 11th place.
