Semfinals Set for 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as Seattle Sounders Defeats Los Angeles Galaxy for Remaining Spot

Seattle Sounders Joins Chicago Fire, FC Dallas and USL PRO Richmond Kickers in Semifinals

CHICAGO (July 13, 2011) – The Seattle Sounders defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1 to advance to the semifinals of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The two teams were battling for the last spot in the round, with the Sounders joining the Chicago Fire, FC Dallas and USL PRO Richmond Kickers, who won their respective quarterfinal matches last night.

The Sounders opened the scoring early in the fourth minute when Nate Jacqua beat the Galaxy defense and put one past goalkeeper Josh Saunders. In the 25th minute, Fredy Montero doubled the Sounders’ lead when he scored from the top of the 18-yard box. The Galaxy got on the board in the 40th minute when Adam Cristman connected on a great cross from Chris Birchall, cutting the deficit going into the half. The Sounders added one more in the 72nd minute when Lamar Neagle connected on a beautiful pass into the box by Alvaro Fernandez, cementing the 3-1 win.

In the other quarterfinals, the Fire defeated the New York Red Bulls with a convincing 4-0 win, and FC Dallas shut out Real Salt Lake at home with two unanswered goals. The Richmond Kickers upset Sporting Kansas City with the 2-0 win and enters the semifinals as the only Division III team. For more information on last night’s games, click here.

With the Sounders win, the semifinal matches are set and take place on Tuesday, Aug. 30, with the teams battling for their spot in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4. The winner will earn a $100,000 cash prize, while the runner-up will collect $50,000.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 97 consecutive years dating back to 1914.
