CHICAGO (Tuesday, May 7, 2002) - Holland has announced an impressive squad to face the U.S. Men’s National Team in the USA’s World Cup send-off match on May 19 at CMGI Field in Foxboro, Mass., and live on ABC at 2 p.m. ET. England’s PFA Player of the Year Ruud van Nistelrooy highlights a talented team that will face the U.S. in their final match before the U.S. kicks off the World Cup on June 5 against Portugal in Suwon, Korea. The Netherlands are currently ranked 9th in the FIFA world rankings and lost in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the 2000 European Championship and the 1998 World Cup.
Holland failed to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup after finishing in third place in a group that included Portugal and Ireland. However, the Holland team does not lack talent, and the team announced for the May 19 friendly includes Patrick Kluivert (Barcelona), Edgar Davids (Juventus), Jaap Stam (Lazio Roma), and van Nistelrooy (Manchester United). John O’Brien’s Ajax of Amsterdam teammate Andy van der Meyde was also named to the Holland team.
van Nistelrooy was sensational in his first year with Manchester United and is currently tied for scoring honors with 23 league goals for Manchester United. The Dutch striker has scored 36 times across all competitions for Man. United and was the goalscoring leader (10 goals) in UEFA’s Champions League. He also tied for tops with five assists in UEFA Champions League.
Kluivert finished the Spanish League season tied for second with 18 league goals. Stam and Davids missed much of the 2001-2002 season through suspension, but both are recognized among the best in the world at their position. Stam made headlines when Manchester United made him the world’s most expensive defender after the 1998 World Cup.
The U.S. has met Holland just one other time, ironically in the run up to the 1998 World Cup. The Dutch topped the U.S. 2-0 on Feb. 21, 1998, in Miami, Fla.
The match will be mark the first time a U.S. National Team has played at Foxboro’s recently-opened CMGI Field. The U.S. Men’s National Team was undefeated at the old Foxboro Stadium, posting a 7-0-3 all-time record, including the historic 2-1 win against Jamaica on Oct. 7, 2001, that clinched a spot in Korea/Japan for the U.S.
Tickets for the USA-Holland clash, which will be followed by an MLS encounter between the New England Revolution and the Chicago Fire, are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at www.ussoccer.com. For more information call 877-GET-REVS.
