U.S. Open Cup Panel Rules that First Round Match Must Be Replayed

CHICAGO (June 25, 2003) – The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Adjudication and Discipline Panel has ruled that a June 4, 2003 match, won 1-0 by the Bridgeport Italians of the United States Adult Soccer Association over the Chesapeake Dragons of the United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League, must be replayed due to the use of an ineligible player.

A letter of complaint was sent to U.S. Soccer on June 18 by Chesapeake alleging that Bridgeport had provided “inaccurate” information regarding its roster and that they fielded an ineligible player, Darin Lewis. Lewis, who has played on the Trinidad & Tobago National Team, was listed on the team roster as “Lewis Daria.”

The Panel determined that Darin Lewis, who is registered with U.S. Soccer as a professional player, was ineligible to play. However, the Panel also found that Bridgeport did not attempt to deceive with regard to having Lewis on its roster simply because his name was entered incorrectly.

In a 3-2 decision, the Panel ruled that the match must be replayed with Chesapeake as the home team by July 2. Bridgeport will be responsible for the expense of staging the match

Due to the proximity of this decision to the second round of the 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Wednesday, June 25, match between the Bridgeport Italians and the New Hampshire Phantoms of the USL’s Pro Select League will be played as originally scheduled. Depending on the outcome of this second-round game, there are different scenarios for how these teams will advance in the tournament.

Scenario 1: Bridgeport beats New Hampshire
If Bridgeport tops New Hampshire in the second round on June 25, 2003, the Italians will then play a rematch of their first-round game at the Chesapeake Dragons on July 2. Then:
a: If Bridgeport wins the rematch, they will advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup to face the   Rochester Raging Rhinos on July 16.
b: If Chesapeake wins the rematch, they will travel to play the New Hampshire Phantoms in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. The winner of the Chesapeake vs. New Hampshire match then moves on to face the Rochester Raging Rhinos on July 16.

Scenario 2: New Hampshire beats Bridgeport
If New Hampshire tops Bridgeport in the second round on June 25, 2003, then Chesapeake will travel to face New Hampshire on July 10. The winner of the Chesapeake vs. New Hampshire match then moves on to face the Rochester Raging Rhinos on July 16.
