CASL Chelsea FC Academy Takes Seventh Place in U-15/16 Age Division with 2-1 Win

CARSON, Calif. (July 16, 2010) – CARSON, Calif. (July 15, 2010) – CASL Chelsea FC Academy U-15/16 took seventh place at the 2010 Development Academy Finals Week by defeating D.C. United U-15/16 2-1 on the last day of matches for the U-15/16 age division in Carson, Calif.

CASL used a double from Fernando Castellanos with both goals set up by Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler to take the match and close out their Finals Week on a high note. D.C. equalized the match through Ahmed Ismail in the second half before Castellanos headed home the winner in the 71st minute. The match was played evenly throughout, though, and D.C. can head back home knowing they finished the 2009/2010 Academy season in the top eight in the nation.

“I’m proud of our guys. We came out with great energy,” said CASL head coach Carlos Somoano. “We worked our tails off … and it showed what we’ve been trying to do all year long.”

Under a beating midday sun, the teams started the match almost exclusively playing down the CASL left and D.C. right flank. In the 13th minute, Cody Albrecht, who was a constant threat all afternoon, worked the first chance of the game when his shot was deflected over for a corner kick.

Six minutes later in the 19th, CASL broke the deadlock when Vandermaas-Peeler took off on a mazy run down the left channel. Eventually beating his defenders to the endline, he cut back the ball across the six yard box and out of the reach of the ‘keeper. Castellanos was there to knock home his first of the game with a sliding effort and put CASL in front for the rest of the first half.

D.C. made two substitutions at halftime which paid immediate dividends. Ahmed, less than 10 minutes into the half, let his presence be know with a low hard effort from 20 yards after collecting a clearance from the CASL defense. His shot avoided CASL goalkeeper Sam Williams and settled into the net in the 47th minute to knot the match at 1-1.

With the heat taking a toll on the players, penalties loomed as the match entered the final 10 minutes. However, Castellanos and Vandermaas-Peeler had different thoughts as the combined for the second time in the game to give CASL the victory and end their season with a win. Vandermaas-Peeler found himself with space deep are the right and hit a looping cross to the far post where Castellanos stretched over his defender to meet it. If his header was not particularly strong, it was certainly well placed, as it avoided the outstretched fingertips of Tyler Back and hit the back of the net.

CASL was able to kill off the rest of the match aside from a dangerous chance from another D.C. substitute, Yaw Amankwa, who had broken free in the box. The striker was not able to beat Williams from close range and the lead was preserved as the final whistle blew moments later.
