EA Sports Virtual World Cup: Day 1
Teams: Germany vs. Costa Rica (Group A)
Location: Munich Olympiastadion; Munich
Date: June 9, 2006
Players: Brian Perk (Germany) vs. Jared Jeffrey (Costa Rica)
Final Score: GER 2 - CRC 1
Jared Jeffrey's Take (Costa Rica):
Germany was all over me to start the game and things didn’t look good when I fell behind early on a set piece scored by Michael Ballack. Even though I was down a goal, I bounced back and soon Costa Rica had found their rhythm and as the game went on controlled most of the possession. In the second half, we rallied back and pulled even as Paulo Wanchope was finally able to sneak one past Oliver Kahn, who had been a brick wall up to that point. I don’t know if the goal took everything out of my guys or what, but Costa Rica just fell apart. Germany was all over us and with about 20 minutes left they took the lead for good when Gerald Asamoah got free on a breakaway and finished to the lower left corner. I’d like to say that the home fans were a factor, but the truth is Germany was just the better team and did well to hold on to their lead.
Teams: Poland vs. Ecuador (Group A)
Location: Gelsenkirchen Arena AufSchalke; Gelsenkirchen
Date: June 9, 2006
Players: Andres Suazo (Poland) vs. Chris Miller (Ecuador)
Final Score: ECU 1 – POL 0
Andres Suazo's Take (Poland):
I came out strong with Poland in the first half, passing the ball well and making good runs in the attack. I was dominating the game at first, but then Ecuador came on strong and controlled the match. Ecuador got some good looks and kept pushing and pushing until finally right near the end of the match they scored off a spectacular through ball and a clinical finish by Agustin Delgado. The truth is the game should have been at least 3-1 in favor of Poland! At least! Poland created a number of chances, the only problem was we couldn’t finish. We will need to work on our finishing if we want to get anywhere in the tournament.
