U.S. Futsal Calls 13 Players into Camp for Final Training Prior to FIFA Futsal World Championship

CHICAGO (Oct. 20, 2004) — United States Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer has selected a 13-player roster for the team’s final training camp prior to departing for the FIFA Futsal World Championship 2004 in Chinese Taipei from Nov. 21 to Dec. 5.

The three-day camp begins on Sunday, Oct. 24 in Milwaukee, Wis., and will include four training sessions including a pair of scrimmages vs. the Milwaukee Wave of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

The U.S. will depart for Chinese Taipei on Nov. 14 and their first game will be played on Nov. 21. The U.S., which qualified by winning the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship in July in Costa Rica, was drawn into Group C with Italy, Japan and Paraguay. The U.S. opens play in Tao Yuan County on Nov. 21 vs. Italy, and will play their second match vs. Paraguay on Nov. 23 there as well. The U.S. will close group play vs. Japan on Nov. 25 in Taipei City, the nation’s capital.

All but one of the 13 players on the U.S. roster play in the MISL, with retired Baltimore Blast goalkeeper Scott Hileman the only player not active in the league this season. The players called into Milwaukee represent six MISL teams, who will release their players for this camp. With the 2004-2005 regular season just getting underway, MISL teams will also release the players on the final world championship roster, which will be announced by Tozer following the camp on Wednesday, October 27.

The Milwaukee Wave lead all teams with four representatives in this camp, while the Philadelphia Kixx, Baltimore Blast and San Diego Sockers send two each. The Chicago Storm and Cleveland Force will each be represented by one player.

The roster features 10 of the 12 players from the CONCACAF Championship team. Midfielder Johnny Torres, forward Steve Butcher and defender Pat Morris are the three additions, although Torres joined the team on a trip to Brazil in September and each player has four career goals with the team.

U.S. captain Sean Bowers returns to the team for the first time since July and brings a total of 29 caps with him, more than any active player and second all-time, one behind Jim Gabarra. He will anchor a defense that includes Pat White and Lee Tschantret, who are both among the top five cap winners for the U.S. all-time and two of the three players to appear in all 11 matches for the team this year.

The U.S. midfield is led by Joel Shanker, the only other player to appear in all 11 matches this season. He is also tied for the team lead with five goals. Torres, Danny Kelly and John Ball join him in the midfield. Up top, Butcher joins forwards Greg Howes, Andy Guastaferro and Todd Dusosky who combined to score nine of the USA’s 15 goals at the CONCACAF championship tournament.

Futsal is a derivative of soccer played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with a six-man squads and walls. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico and Ronaldo grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills.
