U.S. Olympic Committee Awards WNT and Abby Wambach With Team and Athlete of the Year Honors

CHICAGO (Feb. 9, 2012) – The U.S. Women’s National Team and Abby Wambach were awarded January Team and Athlete of the Month honors by the U.S. Olympic Committee thanks to their incredible performances at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Vancouver, Canada.

The U.S. Women earned the January Team of the Month title by breezing to a first-place finish at Olympic Qualifying. Between Jan. 19-29, the USA won all five tournament matches and outscored its opponents 38-0. In the first game of the tournament, the Women beat Dominican Republic in a 14-0 rout, a new record for most goals scored in a game. The previous U.S. best was 12 goals, set in 1991.

Abby Wambach was named January Female Athlete of the Month after once again showing her invaluable contribution to the team. Wambach started all five games, adding six goals and four assists. During the tournament, she scored twice against Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Canada while also recording assists in each of those matches. The forward now has 131 goals, good for second place all-time behind only Mia Hamm, who has 158.

Snowboarder Shaun White took home the January Male Athlete of the Month honor for collecting his 12th gold medal at the Winter X Games, the most in X Games history.

Each National Governing Body was allowed to nominate one female, one male and one team. A voting panel selected the winners from the pool of nominees, and fan votes via Twitter counted for 10 percent of the total vote.
