WUSA Announces Skills Competition During Championship Pre-Game Festivities
NEW YORK (Thursday, August 16, 2001) - When the Inaugural WUSA Championship Game is played at Foxboro Stadium next Saturday, August 25, fans will not only see terrific game action between the league's two remaining teams, but a full-day of soccer entertainment.
Headlining the championship day's pre-game events will be the Inaugural WUSA.com Ultimate Goal Challenge, featuring stars from the six WUSA teams not playing in the title match, including Boston's Kristine Lilly and Maren Meinert, Washington's Mia Hamm and Carolina's Carla Overbeck.
Gates open at 12:30 p.m. at Foxboro Stadium with a large assortment of entertainment opportunities for fans to choose from. Additional pre-game entertainment will include musical on-field performances, including the national anthem sung by Q records recording star Joey McIntyre; WUSA trivia contests; the Sports Magic team - an interactive team of four fan-friendly people, equipped with T-shirts, games, giveaways, balloons, and more; the Soccer Sensation, a festival-like interactive soccer experience for the whole family; and appearances by the Mascots of all of the WUSA teams.
The format for the Inaugural WUSA.com Ultimate Goal Challenge will be for players to score as many goals as possible, with the top scorers advancing to the next round. Players will receive cross passes from servers and score as many goals as possible in 45-second rounds. Players must shoot the ball out of the air never letting the balls touch the ground. WUSA goalkeepers will defend the goal.
In the preliminary round, there will be three 45-second rounds at each goal, with two rounds occurring at the same time at two different goals, each with a goalkeeper. The top two overall goal scorers advance to final round, with the leading goal scorer crowned the Inaugural WUSA.com Ultimate Goal Champion.
The WUSA Championship Banner will be raised as part of the pre-game festivities, and children representing players from all of the WUSA teams, will march out with a WUSA player from the respective team as part of the on-field ceremonies.
The Inaugural WUSA Championship Game half-time ceremonies will feature an opportunity for one lucky fan to win one million dollars. The Inaugural WUSA Post-Season Award winners will also be introduced.
