CARSON, Calif. (July 14, 2010) – Internationals U-15/16 defeated CASL Chelsea U-15/16 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Carson, Calif., at the 2010 Development Academy Finals Week in their final match of group play.
With Cal Odyssey clinching the number one spot in Group 2 on Monday, CASL and Internationals were vying for a spot in the third-place match on Friday with both teams knowing that only a victory would guarantee them second place in the group.
Internationals winger Scott Scaperato provided the heroics for the Cleveland, Ohio, club but it would not prove to be enough as the fourth team in Group 2, Baltimore Bays Chelsea U-15/16, prevailed against Cal Odyssey giving them five points. Internationals finished on four points with a 1-1-1 record and CASL remained at fourth in the group managing just a draw in their three group games.
The match began with an open feel to the play. Both teams started positively and looked just as likely to score up through the initial 20 minutes of the half. The teams knew they had to win to earn a chance to play in the third-place match and they came out of the gates with intent and purpose.
As the first period wore on, there was less sustained possession in the midfield and the first real opportunity fell to CASL due to a mistake in the Internationals back line. Forward Monbo Bakar did well to dispossess his defender and set himself free in on goal. With Fernanod Castellanos waiting for a square ball at the top of the area, Bakar chose to go himself but ‘keeper Jacob Russell was off his line to cut the angle and block Bakar’s effort at the CASL attacker’s feet.
The teams traded chances in the 29th and 30th minutes when Internationals had a corner from the right and managed a shot from the top of the box that was brought down by Spence LaCivita in the CASL net. On the other end, Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler’s solo effort after cutting in from the left was saved well by Russell.
Knowing that one mistake could lead to a goal, the teams played cautiously at the start of the second stanza. Neither team offered much in creativity, but were solid in the back and the match progressed without major incident until the last 20 minutes approached. CASL were showing signs of life and leading dangerous counterattacks and creating half chances from deep runs by holding midfielder Andrew Morales.
With 10 minutes remaining Morales made another run late into the box after winger Joaquin Del Rosario showed nifty footwork to beat his man down the line. He then hit a looping cross to the far post where Morales’ header was only denied by a sprawling Russell.
That save would prove enormous for Internationals as they scored just one minute later when Scaperato robbed his man on the right flank and immediately freeing himself behind the defense. As LaCivita advance to cut the angle of Scaperato’s shot, the Internationals winger hit a shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net in the 71st minute.
With just nine minutes left, that would be all the Internationals needed as they saw out the remaining time to end Group 2 play on a win and collect four points.
Internationals will play against Group 1 third place finishers Sockers FC at 3 p.m. PT on Field 3 at The Home Depot Center on Friday, July 16. CASL will meet D.C. United in the seventh-place match at 1 p.m. on Field 2 – also on Friday, July 16.
